Celebrities Make Donations To Help Victims Of Gangwon Province Wildfire

Many stars have contributed to helping the victims of the wildfire in Gangwon Province.

The massive wildfire, which was declared a state of emergency by the government, has led to two deaths and several injuries, destroyed about 260 hectares (approximately 618 acres) of forest land, burned down over a hundred homes, and caused thousands of residents to evacuate to emergency shelters.

According to the Hope Bridge Korea Disaster Relief Association on April 5, many celebrities made donations to contribute towards relief efforts. Yoon Ji Sung, who’s from the city of Wonju in Gangwon Province, gave 10 million won (approximately $8,793) and told the association that he hoped his donation would help the victims.

Writer Kim Eun Sook of hit dramas such as “Descendants of the Sun” and “Goblin” and drama production company Hwa & Dam Pictures CEO Yoon Ha Rim each donated 20 million won (approximately $17,585).

Actress Kim Yoo Jung and comedians Sim Hyun Seop and Song Eun Yi each donated 10 million won (approximately $8,793). A source from the Hope Bridge Korea Disaster Relief Association said, “Sim Hyun Seop said that he hoped many celebrities would donate after him.”

Actors Song Joong Ki and Nam Joo Hyuk each gifted 30 million won (approximately $26,374), Cube Entertainment gave 50 million won (approximately $43,961), and Jung Il Woo and K.Will each donated 20 million won (approximately $17,585) to the Hope Bridge Korea Disaster Relief Association.

The association plans to use the donations for relief supplies and recovery.

IU donated 100 million won (approximately $87,912) to the Green Umbrella Children’s Foundation which will be used towards children who are victims of the wildfire. The premiere of her newest Netflix original series “Persona” was postponed out of respect for the national disaster.

Super Junior’s Kim Heechul made a donation of 30 million won (approximately $26,374) to the Community Chest of Korea to contribute towards the relief operations in the affected area. The singer is from Hoengseong County in Gangwon Province, and he is the current honorary ambassador of his hometown. Along with his donation, he added, “I was so worried about this wildfire and decided to donate with the earnest hope that it would help with the restoration efforts.”

T-ara’s Hyomin delivered relief supplies including water, ramen, and instant rice to a welfare center in Toseongmyeon. She added, “I sent relief supplies thinking that it would best to directly help on the scene.”

BTS’s fandom ARMY have made donations under the group and fandom name, as well as Kang Daniel’s fans who have donated various amounts with the numbers “12” and “10” for the singer’s birthday which is on December 10.
