Prosecution Demands 2-Year Prison Sentence For Hwang Ha Na’s Illegal Drug Use Case

On July 10, the final trial for Hwang Ha Na’s drug case took place at the Suwon District Court.

Prosecution stated, “The defendant purchased and injected Philopon across several instances. As the nature of the crime is harmful, we request a punishment of two years in prison and 2,200,560 won (approximately $1,862) in fines.”

Hwang Ha Na’s lawyer implored the judge for mercy, saying, “Detained in April, she has been staying in the detention center for over three months and is reflecting on herself. We ask for a sentence related to treatment that will allow her to live safely with her family.”

Her lawyer continued, “Though there is conflict regarding some of the charges, it is because there are differences between the charges and [Hwang Ha Na’s] memory, not because she is denying the charges. She confessed to the police in order to prevent her accomplice from committing a further offense and actively cooperated with [the police].”

In her final testimony, Hwang Ha Na gave the following statement in tears:

I apologize for causing a societal uproar. I am ashamed to think about my past misdeeds, but I am sincerely repenting. I resent myself for only being able to watch from the detention center while my family is being criticized and hurt. Living a detained life in the detention center made me realize the value behind the freedom of everyday life. I would like to receive treatment and return to society as a whole person. I also have plans to teach people who suffer from drug addiction and eating disorders about the treatment I will undergo. Once again, I am deeply reflecting on myself for breaking the law and causing a societal uproar.

Hwang Ha Na was charged with injecting Philopon (a form of methamphetamine) numerous times at her home in Seoul, including between May and June 2015, in September 2015, and between February and March 2019 with her ex-boyfriend Park Yoochun. At his trial, Park Yoochun received a 10-month prison sentence suspended for two years of probation and treatment and a fine of 1.4 million won (approximately $1,182).

The final verdict will be made at Hwang Ha Na’s sentencing trial, which will take place on July 19 at 10 a.m. KST.
