Ong Seong Wu Talks About How Worries Of Idol-Actor Prejudice Affected Him, Shares Story Of A Crazy Family Trip, And More
Ong Seong Wu talked about acting, his family, and more on “Radio Star”!
He appeared as a guest on the March 18 episode of the MBC celebrity talk show. The hosts brought up the fact that Ong Seong Wu took part in the lyrics writing and composition of all the songs on his upcoming mini album.
“I was just planning to do it for one or two songs, but I ended up working on all of them,” said Ong Seong Wu. “When I was first planning the album, there had been a lot of different emotions I’d gone through in the past year. I didn’t want to focus on just one thing; I wanted to include everything. So that’s why my own stories became included like this.”
“Rather than specifically wanting to be a singer-songwriter who composes and writes lyrics, my goal was to include my stories on this album,” he explained.
When asked what kind of feelings he included, Ong Seong Wu said, “There’s a lot, like confusion, emptiness, enlightenment. I felt things like that a lot last year.”
Ong Seong Wu also sang part of his upcoming track “Gravity”! Check it out in the clip below:
The hosts also mentioned that Ong Seong Wu had said that he’d shut down mentally at his drama’s first filming. Ong Seong Wu responded by explaining that he’d made his acting debut last year in the drama “Moments of 18.”
“I studied acting in university, and I’d dreamed of being an actor since then,” he said. “I wanted to right away go out and use what I was learning.”
“I was really excited,” he continued. “When I first got in front of the camera, I froze. I felt like I was confined, and I couldn’t stop thinking about how people were watching me. I felt like the camera was a big threat to me.”
He explained that one of the biggest reasons for that was his fear of how other people would view him and their prejudice because he was an actor who’d started out as an idol. Ong Seong Wu went on to say that he was able to let go of that anxiety because everyone had a good time together filming.
Later on, Ong Seong Wu was asked about how he’d said that his acting practice had been ingrained in him.
“When I was doing my first project, whenever I tried do something, it didn’t work,” he said. “I’d decided too much in advance what kind of scene each scene was. I’d decided where I had to cry, or where I had to get mad. But when I actually said the lines, the tears didn’t come. I had to get angry, but I didn’t feel angry.”
“I approached it the wrong way in the beginning,” he said. “But the director came over and said, ‘This isn’t in the script, but if you’re feeling sadness, you could cry. But it’s okay too if you don’t. Let’s roll with it.’ After they said that, the tears came.”
Ong Seong Wu also told a story about a trip he organized for his family that didn’t go as he’d expected.
“When my family was going through a hard time, my aunts helped us out by putting money together, and when we really needed it, they lent us money and helped us,” said Ong Seong Wu. “My mother told me, ‘If you achieve success later on, you have to repay your aunts.'”
Ong Seong Wu said that this has remained in his mind for a long time. After his debut, he was at a family gathering where his aunts said, “Since you’re doing well now, please send us on a trip!”
Ong Seong Wu said he right away agreed that he would definitely do that. He shared that last year, they went on a 13-person trip (which included his aunts and their husbands) to Da Nang, Vietnam.
He hesitated a bit as he said, “But I don’t plan on doing that again,” which made the MCs laugh.
“The biggest mistake was that it wasn’t a package trip,” he explained. “My older sister, one of my aunts, and I planned the trip ourselves. It was so stressful!”
“I spent more than 10 million won [approximately $7,890] but they complained all the time,” he said. He shared that there were always complaints about what they were doing or about the food, which made the MCs laugh. “Even if they got a massage, they’d say it wasn’t refreshing,” he said.
“It was so stressful,” said Ong Seong Wu. “I shared a room with my sister, and whenever we went to bed we’d say, ‘Is it still the first day?’ ‘Is it still the second day?’ ‘Is it still the third day?’ ‘When are we going home?’ We’d be exhausted and just say to each other, ‘Let’s not come next time.'” He said that they wanted to next time just send their family on a trip without going along.
He smiled as he said, “When this airs, my aunts are going to say, ‘When did we say that?!'”
Ong Seong Wu will release his first solo mini album “Layers” on March 25.
