Gong Yoo In Talks To Star In New Dystopian Sci-Fi Drama Along With Bae Doona

Gong Yoo may be starring in a sci-fi drama for his next project!

On April 21, Sports Chosun reported that a source from the entertainment industry had stated, “Gong Yoo has selected the Netflix original ‘The Sea of Silence’ (literal translation) as his next project.”

Following reports, a representative of Gong Yoo’s agency Management SOOP clarified, “It is true that Gong Yoo is reviewing an offer to star in ‘The Sea of Silence.’ It is not confirmed.”

“The Sea of Silence” is a sci-fi thriller that is set in the future, where desertification has left the earth with food and water shortages. A special team is tasked with retrieving mysterious samples from an abandoned research base on the moon.

If he accepts the offer, Gong Yoo will be taking on the role of Yoon Jae, a soldier and team leader at the Space and Aeronautics Administration. He’s a character who leads his team members with his exceptional work skills and shining charisma.

Having starred in various genres over the course of his acting career, this upcoming dystopian drama may become Gong Yoo’s first Netflix project. Previously, Gong Yoo starred in the films “The Age of Shadows,” “Silenced,” “Train to Busan,” and “Kim Ji Young, Born 1982” as well as the popular dramas “Coffee Prince” and “Goblin.”

The upcoming series will be based on a short film of the same name by director Choi Hang Yong, who was highlighted at the 13th Mise-en-scène Short Film Festival in 2014. He will be directing the new Netflix original series, Jung Woo Sung will participate in producing it, and “Mother” screenwriter Park Eun Kyo will be in charge of the script. Bae Doona is also currently in talks to star in the drama as well.

“The Sea of Silence” is an eight-part project, and it will begin filming in August.
