Lee Seung Gi Shares His Thoughts On The Judges On “Sing Again,” What Advice He’d Like To Give Contestants, And More

On November 12, JTBC’s new variety program “Sing Again” shared an interview with Lee Seung Gi.

Lee Seung Gi is the host of “Sing Again,” a “rebooting” audition program that will give unknown or forgotten singers another chance to take the stage and show their skills before the public. It is being helmed by the producers of “Sugar Man.”

Lee Seung Gi said, “I decided to appear on the show because I really liked the show’s premise. During filming, I found myself getting immersed in the stories of the contestants. I can’t wait for the public to take an interest in these amazing singers and songs again. I’m really looking forward to the first episode.”

Although he is the MC, he was asked what he would be like if he were a judge. He said, “I think my standard would be: ‘Do I want to hear this person sing again?’ Auditions only give you a short time to decide, so I think that most people come to some kind of decision by the first verse.”

The panel of judges is composed of a senior panel of Yoo Hee Yeol, Lee Sun Hee, Jeon In Kwon, and Kim Ea Na, and a junior panel of Super Junior’s Kyuhyun, Sunmi, Lee Hae Ri, and WINNER’s Song Mino. Asked who he would be most similar to as a judge, Lee Seung Gi replied, “I learned music from Lee Sun Hee, so I think she and I would be most similar in our musical standards. Of the junior panel, Kyuhyun and I have similar tastes in the kind of music we pursue, so I think we’d have similar standards.”

To help the contestants, Lee Seung Gi talked about his own struggles after his debut. After the huge success of his debut track, “Because You’re My Woman,” he fell into a slump because of the pressure of his newfound fame. He said, “I felt the limits of my talent, to the point that I wondered if I could even continue being a celebrity. The higher my success, the worse my slump became.”

He continued, “The period of happiness you experience while making music is quite short. You work yourself to the bone in the recording studio, you agonize about how to express the song’s emotions, you feel despair when the song isn’t promoted well. You endure all of this, and then, for a single moment, you experience joy. The contestants will all go through a hard time, but I hope that they will experience that moment of sweetness during ‘Sing Again.'”

“Sing Again” premieres on November 16 at 10:30 p.m. KST.
