“The Uncanny Counter” Webtoon Artist Shares Excitement for Drama Adaptation + Which Cast Member He Was Surprised By

Jang Yi, the webtoon artist behind “The Uncanny Counter,” sat down for an interview to talk about his webtoon’s upcoming drama adaptation from OCN.

The drama version of “The Uncanny Counter” stars Jo Byeong Gyu, gugudan’s Kim Sejeong, Yeom Hye Ran, and Yoo Joon Sang. It is a “superhero” drama about a demon hunters called “counters” with supernatural powers who disguise themselves as employees of a noodle restaurant to find and defeat demons who have come to Earth in pursuit of eternal life.

Jang Yi said, “I’m grateful and happy that my webtoon got a drama adaptation. I’m happy to see a new version of my story as interpreted by the screenwriter, director, and actors. As the original artist as well as an ordinary viewer, I’m interested to see the work of other artists in other fields from mine. I’m also grateful to the amazing readers who made this possible by spreading the news of my webtoon to a bigger audience.”

He said that he was very satisfied with the casting choices. “The characters in the story are meant to have a close, family-like bond,” he said. “I could see the production staff working hard to create that atmosphere when it came to casting.”

Jang Yi continued, “After I finished the first season of the webtoon, I took a break and watched a drama with my wife. I noticed one actor in particular and joked to my wife, ‘What do you think of him in the role of So Moon?’ She agreed that he was the spitting image of him. When Jo Byeong Gyu was cast as So Moon, my wife and I were so shocked that we stared at each other and laughed. He was my No. 1 choice to play the role.”

About the rest of the cast, he said, “These are actors that my family, my friends, and I all like. I’m interested in every single one of them.I’m excited to see how they transform into counters and bring their characters to life.” He picked Choi Jang Mool as the character he looked forward to the most. “He wasn’t very important in the webtoon at first, but as I kept writing it, my thoughts changed, and now I love him as much as I love the main character. I’m looking forward to Ahn Suk Hwan’s portrayal of him a lot.”
