"Busted!" PDs Talk About Their Gratitude For Yoo Jae Suk, Possibility Of Season 4, And More

The producing directors (PDs) of “Busted!” spoke about the show’s latest season, their gratitude for their cast and guests, and more!

On January 28, PDs Jo Hyo Jin and Go Min Seok participated in an interview to discuss the third season of mystery variety show “Busted!” The cast includes Yoo Jae Suk, Lee Seung Gi, Lee Kwang Soo, Kim Jong Min, Park Min Young, EXO’s Sehun, and Kim Sejeong.

The season has already showcased a wide variety of exciting new scenarios and cases, in addition to appearances by many top stars. Some include Song Ji Hyo, Jo Se Ho, Yoo Byung Jae, and Hwang Kwang Hee, as well as actors Im Soo Hyang, Ahn Bo Hyun, Jo Byeong Gyu, Hwang Bo Ra, Lee Yong Nyeo, Oh Man Seok, and Kim Hye Yoon.

PD Jo Hyo Jin explained, “We just happened to have really extravagant guests, but it’s not something we planned.” Laughing, he added, “We did not take popularity into account when inviting guests. There are some people who gained more recognition after filming.”

He continued, “Since our system does not curate the episode around the character, we decide on the story and then invite guests we think would be suitable. Since the judges don’t have a script, we cannot predict what will happen. As they don’t have lines, I’m sure our guests had a hard time. This is also why we felt the need to seek out actors with theater experience when we were filming season one and two.”

Using Kim Hye Yoon and SF9‘s Rowoon as an example, Jo Hyo Jin shared, “When we were thinking about who could make a really bright guest, we thought of Kim Hye Yoon. We knew she had a connection to Rowoon through the drama “Extraordinary You” and we felt that viewers would also enjoyably think of that while watching.”

The PDs also expressed their gratitude for Yoo Jae Suk, who has worked with Jo Hyo Jin on “Running Man” and all three seasons of “Busted!” He commented, “When we were planning, I told Yoo Jae Suk, ‘If you don’t participate, I don’t think it’ll be easy to make this program. If you don’t do it, I’m going to make a living after creating something else.’ Without Yoo Jae Suk, I don’t think I would’ve done this program.”

To elaborate, he added, “It was quite experimental. There needed to be a role where someone could role play in a fixed setting while making others laugh. That role was fulfilled by Yoo Jae Suk. He has a special skill of looking at the overall picture while also pointing out individual characters. While the other cast members also worked hard, I believe that thanks to Yoo Jae Suk, the scenarios were able to be deeply dove into while simultaneously being funny.”

Regarding the rest of the cast, Jo Hyo Jin commented, “I’m also thankful to Lee Kwang Soo, Kim Jong Min, and Lee Seung Gi for creating so many laughs. Park Min Young, Sejeong, and Sehun played big roles in the detective work. Sejeong and Sehun especially improved so much in season three that I was simultaneously flustered and happy.”

After three seasons, “Busted!” will be coming to an end. Due to the open ending, many viewers have voiced their desire for a fourth season. Jo Hyo Jin PD responded, “I’m thankful for the response. The reason we ended with an open-ending was for the sake of conveying a message. We concluded with hopes that our viewers would make a good judgement.”

Lastly, he commented, “As of right now, we believe that ending it with season three is the greatest conclusion. I also have some thought that it’d be great to try a type of spin-off program to continue looking at a few more topics.”
