Brave Girls Opens Up About How They Slowly Gained Popularity Among Military Fans On

Brave Girls talked about their hard-earned rise to fame on the latest episode of “Ask Us Anything”!

On the April 3 broadcast of the popular JTBC variety show, Brave Girls made their first-ever appearance as guests, and the cast members gave them an enthusiastic welcome.

During the episode, the “Ask Us Anything” cast brought up the viral video that recently helped make “Rollin'” a breakout hit four years after its release: the now-famous fan-edited compilation of Brave Girls’ performances of the song, which included some amusingly passionate reactions from their fans in the military.

After they watched the video again together, Seo Jang Hoon asked, “This footage of the military troops is from before the song climbed back up the charts, right?” Yuna confirmed, “Yes, this is from our hiatus of three years and five months [between comebacks].”

Seo Jang Hoon then commented on the contrast between their popularity among soldiers in the military, who were already big fans of Brave Girls and “Rollin'” back then, versus the general public, among whom the group was not yet well-known.

“It must have been so strange for the Brave Girls members,” he said. “When you went to perform for the military, the troops were this passionate and excited, but as soon as you left, people wouldn’t have recognized you. There must have been such a huge gap [between the reactions you got inside and outside the military].”

Describing their most memorable performance for the troops, Brave Girls recalled a time when they performed outdoors on a remote island. “We were performing outside,” said Minyoung, “and all of a sudden, one of the soldiers suddenly ran towards the stage. After seeing him run, everyone else came running towards us as well, and that created a sandstorm like in [the film] ‘Mad Max.'”

However, the Brave Girls members revealed that they hadn’t always gotten such an enthusiastic response. When asked about their very first performance for the troops, Minyoung shared that they weren’t yet popular among soldiers in the military back then.

“At the time, we didn’t get such a great response,” she recalled. “But after our promotions for ‘Rollin’,’ once some time had passed, things started to change. At some point, they even started dancing along to our choreography and doing our official fan chant.”

“[That kind of response] was a huge source of strength for us,” said Minyoung. “We had a long hiatus [between comebacks] that lasted for three years and five months, and if it weren’t for those performances and the soldiers in the military, it would have been hard for us to endure that long period of time.”

Later on in the show, Brave Girls expressed their gratitude by putting on a special live performance for some of their fans who had served in the military during that time.

As their excited fans tuned in via video call and held up signs with sweet messages of support, Brave Girls performed their smash hit “Rollin’,” and Yujeong and Minyoung collaborated with Lee Sang Min and Kim Young Chul for a special performance of Roo’ra’s “Angel Without Wings.”

The Brave Girls members also teamed up with Super Junior‘s Kim Heechul for a fun performance of their song “High Heels,” which you can check out here!
