5 Encouraging Moments From Episodes 7-8 Of "Law And The City"
Last week’s episodes of “Law and The City” had prepared not one but a lot of surprises for us. Although there were some major issues, this K-drama keeps on proving that it is possible to have a compelling story without affecting the pace of the show or the characters in the process. Even better, this time we get to see a new side in everyone at Hyungmin Law Group. From friendship to romance, here are all the moments that made our hearts flutter with their warmth.
Warning: spoilers from episodes 7-8 ahead!
1. Cho Chang Won defending people in need
Cho Chang Won (Kang You Seok) is one of the characters who has shown great complexity so far. He appeared to be carefree and loud in the beginning, but little by little, he has shown he isn’t the shallow and easygoing person viewers thought (not that it is a bad thing). On the contrary, as we saw in this episode, he is the type of friend who would hide his troubles from others and be the one who supports instead. For example, he has been hiding the subtle yet stinging harassment from his boss, a petty man who only cares for money.
Chang Won has a heart of gold, and he proves it by passionately defending his clients, even if it is a pro bono case of a woman who falls for a voice-phishing scam. However, despite trying his best to prove her innocence, she is found guilty. In an attempt to help her, he offers to pay the fine, but she strongly refuses it. Although you can understand where he is coming from and you can feel his genuine concern for the innocent woman, this shows that not all good intentions will find a nice response in the end. But that doesn’t change the fact that he is a caring and generous person despite the adversities.
2. Ha Sang Gi mentoring law students
On the other hand, someone who also had a notorious change in his character is Ha Sang Gi (Im Seong Jae). After opening up about his humble upbringing with his friends, it appears a wall between him and the rest of his group fell down. He isn’t exactly a chatterbox now, but the moment Kim Hyung Min (Yeom Hye Ran) suggests inviting a group of law students as interns in their firm, he steps up and becomes a great mentor, even for her. At first, it looked like he was only motivated by money, but in reality, he is truly passionate about his work as a lawyer.
This new side of him impresses not only the students, the building owner, and his colleagues but also his boss. Though Kim Ryu Jin (Kim Ji Hyun) might seem aloof and cold most of the time, she isn’t indifferent to the charm Sang Gi shows while teaching the young lawyers. It would be a bit of a stretch to say they are leaning towards a possible romance, but it would definitely be funny to watch these two awkward and quiet people opening up to love after getting to know each other better. After all, who doesn’t love an office romance between a strong female boss and a shy, gentle co-worker?
3. Ahn Ju Hyeong and Kang Hui Ji becoming a couple
If we are talking about romance, there is plenty of that between Kang Hui Ji (Mun Ka Young) and Ahn Ju Hyeong (Lee Jong Suk). Despite their chemistry and more than casual flirting while remembering their time together in Hong Kong, it was still uncertain how they would resolve their current status. At this point, Ju Hyeong’s cute jealousy fits or Hui Ji’s notorious interest weren’t enough. Luckily, they figured out a way to make things work quite naturally. It might not have been a grandiose love confession, but it’s still perfect and beautiful in its simplicity and straightforwardness.
They show how a mature, grown-up relationship might develop even in the early stages as long as you have honest communication and are willing to open up to your partner. And that doesn’t mean there’s no romance or heart-fluttering moments between them. When Hui Ji faces a major setback, she trusts Ju Hyeong enough to be the first one to talk about it or ask for help. Knowing you have a solid person beside you whom you can rely on during hard times and still have fun and enjoy everyday life is probably one of the most romantic things in the world.
4. Kang Hui Ji’s friends helping her through a family crisis
If there’s something this K-drama has shown, it is that life is really unpredictable. Right when everything seems to be going her way, Hui Ji gets the news that her father has been sued for fraud. As disheartening as it is to watch this radiant character lose a bit of her glow while dealing with her father being in prison, this also gave us the chance to appreciate the amazing group of friends she’s found. Through ups and downs, they have each other’s backs. Even if they’ve known each other for a short time, they don’t hesitate to help her find a solution.
Whether it is Ju Hyeong taking the lead on the case and staying level-headed at all times, Sang Gi taking care of Hui Ji’s urgent cases, or Chang Won and Bae Mun Jeong (Ryu Hye Young) constantly checking up on her, they prove that united they stand. And sure enough, they are able to prove the innocence of Hui Ji’s father. To make this moment even more perfect, they get to share a hearty meal after what seemed like a long while and finally make official Hui Ji and Ju Hyeong’s relationship. Who wouldn’t feel comforted and hopeful watching them being the best squad in the world?
5. Bae Mun Jeong fighting for her rights as a mother-to-be
One character that’s easy to love deeply is Bae Mun Jeong. She isn’t just Ju Hyeong’s close friend and colleague but she is pretty much the person who keeps their squad together. Whether it’s finding a new delicious restaurant or being a comforting presence when things seem to be harder than usual, she is the one to rely on. Seeing her embrace her new facet as a mother has been a journey so far. She represents the struggle many modern women face nowadays. But if you thought being pregnant would make her change her whole personality, that is far from the reality.
She is as hardworking as ever, even risking her well-being at times to prove she is still an ace of an attorney. Furthermore, she is ready to defend her rights as a mother-to-be. Whether it is getting the designated seat for pregnant women or her maternity leave at work, it looks like she will have to hold a strong stance in the face of an impartial society very soon. Will she have her friends’ support on this as well? That’s something to look forward to in the upcoming episodes of “Law and The City”!
