Weekly K-Pop Music Chart 2011 - June Week 2
Beast rises to No. 1 this week with “Fiction”, the title track from their first full album “Fiction And Fact”. This song has swept nearly all music charts in Korea, therefore getting a goods score of 935. It is the first time in a month that the No. 1 song is over 900 points. With their latest No. 1 song, Beast has firmly established themselves as one of the premier boy bands in Korea.
Last week’s No. 1, Baek Ji Young’s “Normally”, is down to No. 2 this week despite gaining 36 points. FT Island’s “Hello Hello” looks to challange for the top spot next week as it has already overtaken “Fiction” on some of our chart sources.
Only one new song in the top 10 this week and it is Jang Woo Hyuk’s “Time Is [L]Over”, moving all the way up from No. 23 to No. 6. Jang is well known as the best dancer from one of Korea’s most popular boy group ever, “H.O.T”. This is his first release in nearly five years. Fans are looking forward to see his amazing stage performance again.
The highest debut this week is just outside the top 10. At No. 11, Secret’s latest hit “Starlight Moonlight” could possibly join the race for No. 1 next week. If Beast is the fastest rising boy band in Korea, then Secret is probably the fastest rising girl group in Korea. They already had a five-week No. 1 song “Shy Boy” at the beginning of this year and is looking to add another chart topping hit just before they make their Japanese debut next month.
A new chart record is set this week as the popular MBC drama “The Greatest Love” has five songs on our chart, including three songs in the top 20 – IU’s “Hold My Hand” at No. 17, Huh Gak’s “Don’t Forget Me” debuts at No. 18, and Sunny Hill’s “Pit-A-Pat” at No. 19. This drama also have G.na’s “Because You’re My Person” at No. 26, and K.Will’s “Real Love Song” at No. 33. Last year, KBS drama “Baker King Kim Tak Goo” had 4 songs on the chart.

Comment: On May 27, tragedy struck the K-pop world as former SG Wannabe member Chae Dong Ha died after committing suicide. While I always say Brown Eyes revolutionized today’s k-pop with their style of Korean R&B ballad, and SG Wannabe themselves was influenced by Brown Eyes to a certain extent. SG Wannabe’s legacy is bringing along the singing group with perfect harmony concept to K-pop. Many fans said Chae Dong Ha has the best voice in SG Wannabe, and whether it is a coincidence or not, SG Wannabe’s popularity has not been the same since Chae Dong Ha left the group in 2008. SG Wannabe has so many chart topping hits it is difficult to choose a song dedicated in the memory of Chae Dong Ha in this segment. Instead of choosing their most popular songs like “Sin And Punishment”, “Partner For Life”, “Arirang” etc. I went ahead and chose my favorite song “First Snow”. This song is coming from SG’s special winter album “Story In New York” released at the end of 2007. As you read this post, please take a moment to watch this song’s MV and the live performance with Chae Dong Ha one more time.
