Weekly K-Pop Music Chart 2011 - July Week 1
Secret continues their strong run this year with”Starlight Moonlight” remaining No. 1 for the second consecutive week. Secret just won the top song for the first half of 2011 on our chart with “Shy Boy” which spent five weeks on top of our chart earlier this year. The quartet has spent a total of seven weeks No. 1 on our chart, definitely the leading artist so far this year.
Giving Secret a run for the top girl group so far in 2011, f(x) is closing the gap quickly with “Hot Summer”, moving up nine spots to No. 2 and just 13 points behind “Starlight Moonlight”. “Hot Summer” is coming from the group’s repackaged album. The original version produced the No. 1 song “Pinocchio (Danger)”. Let see if “Hot Summer” can take over next week, not only it has to leapfrog “Starlight Moonlight”, but it has also to prevent a new hot song from overtaking everyone.
The new song I am talking about is 2PM’s “Hands Up”. One of the most successful male groups in Korea over the last two years, 2PM has focused on expanding their careers overseas in the past year, particularly in Japan. Now they are finally returning to Korea and releasing their long anticipated second full length album “Hands Up”. The album has just been released and the title song of the same name already debuted at No. 8 on our chart. This song is expected to sweep all music charts soon.
Another new entry at No. 9 is veteran ballad singer Kim Bum Soo’s latest hit “End Love”. This song is from the recently released Part 2 of his 7th album Solista. Kim Bum Soo recently participated in MBC’s show “I Am A Singer” and caught attention to younger fans. “End Love” is written by Yoon Il Sang and penned by Yoon Sa Ra, who also created Kim’s biggest hit “보고싶다 (Missing You)”, one of the classic ballad hits from the last decade.
A surprise entry to the bottom of the top 10 is indie rock band Jang Ki Ha & Faces’ “Be In Such A Relationship”. Fans outside of Korea may not have heard of this group, but they are actually very famous in Korea. Some fans even said they are the top indie group in Korea now. The second album has rock solid sales and the title song “Be In Such A Relationship” even crossed over to mainstream K-pop, doing very well on many chart rankings. If you are tired of pop songs, be sure to check out this refreshing indie band.

YESTERDAY ONCE MORE:
Kim Bum Soo – 보고 싶다 (Missing You)
Genre: Pop Ballad
Album: Kim Bum Soo Vol. 3 (2002) Track 1
Watch: MV Live Performance
Comment: Since Kim Bum Soo is in the top 10, we want to cover this classic hit once again even though it appeared on this segment before. Kim Bum Soo is an R&B singer famous for his smooth, well controlled and emotive vocals. He debuted in 1999 as a faceless singer and has had six albums thus far. His first hit song was “One Day” from his second album, getting major help from a movie like MV starring Song Seung Hun, Song Hye Kyo, both fresh off from “Autumn Tale”, and Ji Jin Hee. At that time, Kim Bum Soo still hadn’t made a public appearance. He started to promote his songs more from his third album on with the title song, “Missing You”. The song was a hit but did not become a classic until later when it was featured as the theme song for the famous SBS drama, Stairway To Heaven (starring Kwon Sang Woo, Choi Ji Woo, Kim Tae Hee, Park Shin Hye, and Lee Wan). This is a very sad ballad song that has been remade and sung in TV and radio shows by many other artists to showcase their own vocal strengths. (credits to ~S2~)
