Weekly K-Pop Music Chart 2011 - August Week 1

Miss A’s “Goodbye Baby” jumped up seven spots to get the No. 1 spot this week. In just its second week on the chart, the song already with a high score of 952 points. The song has swept nearly all music charts in Korea and is expected to stay on top for a while since there are no major challengers in sight. This is the group’s second No. 1 song already.  Miss A who debuted last year with their chart topping hit “Bad Girl Good Girl”, becomes yet another girl group to hit No. 1 this year.

The strength of “Goodbye Baby” pushes both of last week’s top two songs “Roly Poly” and “Mona Lisa” down a spot. Hyuna’s “Bubble Pop” stay put at No. 4. The first of this week’s three new songs in the top 10 is from rising boy group Infinite, who released their first full length album “Over The Top”. The title track “Be Mine” is a powerful synth pop dance number incorporates Euro-pop sounds which were popular in the 80’s. The catchy lyrics about situations between a man and a woman are expected to garner listeners’ interest. “Be Mine” moves up nine spots and is Infinite’s first ever top five hit.

2NE1 switches to a new song “Hate You” this week and it debuts at No. 7. This song may only make a cameo appearance for this week only as the real title song from their second mini-album “Ugly” is expected to make the chart next week.  Both “Hate You” and “Ugly” is more pop-oriented, listener friendly type than their last hit “I’m The Best”. No matter which song is on the chart next week, it should find more success.

The last new song in the top 10 this week is at No. 8. A brand new concept in K-Pop was introduced recently as members from the same group were split into two different sub-units rivaling each other. Of course, I am talking about After School. Their eight members splited into A.S Red and A.S Blue and released a single simultaneously. Both groups favor the popular electronica sound.  A.S Red is more dance oriented, while A.S Blue is more pop and ballad oriented.  So far, it seems A.S Red is more successful as their song “In The Night Sky” moves up nine spots to No. 8, while A.S Blue’s “Wonder Boy” is only at No. 14 this week. We’ll keep an eye on this interesting internal group battle.

Album: Postmen digital single “Oppa I Know”
Listen To: Full Song
Comment: Postmen, who has gained quite some acknowledgement through MBC’s drama song, “Can You Hear My Heart” with the song “Fool” makes a comeback with a medium-tempo ballad, “Oppa That I Know”. This track is a sad tale about a one-sided love despite a brighter melody-line. This number was composed by Min Myung Ki and penned by Min Yun Jae.  (credits to motoway065 for translations)
