Weekly K-Pop Music Chart 2011 – September Week 1

It was a relatively quiet week in the top 10 without much movement. However, we do have a new No. 1 song as SISTAR‘s “So Cool” edged out Super Junior’s two-week champ “Mr. Simple” by ten points. “So Cool” becomes SISTAR’s first ever No. 1 hit on our chart. They debuted just last year and seem to gain more popularity with each new release. This time it reaches a climax with their first chart topping hit. Congratulations.

Even with member Heechul joining the military this week and Super Junior being a hot news item, they were not able to maintain the top spot. We haven’t seen a three-week champ for a while as most of the chart topping hits in recent months only spendone or two weeks on top. That indicates the competition level in K-pop has been very high with many great music releases.

There is only one new song in the top 10 this week. It is a joint effort by December, J-Cera, plus two new female singers Eileen and Yunmi. Together they called themselves CS Numbers. All of them have very strong vocals, making this ballad enjoyable to listen to. In the summer the top 10 is always full of dance beat songs, this is the only pure ballad style song in the top 10 this week.

Lee Moon Sae – 붉은 노을 (Sunset Glow)
Genre: Pop Ballad
External from soompi image
Album: Lee Moon Sae Vol. 5 (1988) Track 7
Watch: Live Performance
Comment: Most of our readers are familiar with Big Bang’s remake version of this song but we are going way back to 1988 to find the original version, which is a classic hit song by legendary singer Lee Moon Sae. Lee started his career in 1983 (when many of the K-pop singers today wasn’t even born yet!). His first two albums did not generate too many attentions. On his third album in 1985 teaming up with producer Lee Young Hoon, Lee had his first big hit “I Don’t Know Yet”. He had his highest popularity in the late 1980s and early 1990s. “Sunset Glow” was from his fifth album in 1988. Despite not being the album title song, this song went on to become a classic hit. Nearly twenty years after the song was first released, Big Bang remade the song with an R&B/Hip-Hop flavor and it became popular again and introduced this classic to younger generations.
