Weekly K-Pop Music Chart 2011 - December Week 4
Merry Christmas to all our readers!
As predicted, IU finished 2011 just as strong as she started, at No. 1 on the chart. “You And I” repeats as our top song, closely holding off Hyuna and Hyun Seung‘s “Trouble Maker” as both songs scored well over 900 points. T-Ara‘s former No. 1 song “Cry Cry” falls another spot to No. 3 this week.
This is an amazing year for female groups and soloists as they occupied our top spot in 40 of 52 weeks, including every week of the last four months. The last No. 1 song by a male group dates back to August Week 4 when Super Junior‘s “Mr. Simple” was on top of our chart. The dominance also extends to the top 10, as in many weeks female artists made a clean sweep of the top three. Never before has this phenomenon occurred in K-pop music before as it has always been male dominated.
There are three new songs in the top 10 this week. At No. 7 is yet another hit song by Huh Gak. This time it is a collaboration with rapper LE from the new group EXID who is set to debut in 2012. We got a good glimpse of EXID on this song as LE did the rapping part while another EXID member Park Jung Hwa starred in the song’s MV with actor Yoo Seung Ho. The song was composed by Rado and penned by LE herself. As the title of the song suggests, this number will allow listeners to cherish their memories through this song.
At No. 8, Infinite gives their fans a Christmas treat with their new song “Lately“. It is a composition by sweetune. Fans will be able to see each of the member’s individual innocent charms in this cheerful song. Infinite is perhaps the busiest artists in K-pop this year as “Lately” is already their sixth hit on the chart.
At No. 9 it is our highest debut this week, Ali‘s “Don’t Act Countrified“. This song is written by veteran composer Choi Joon Young and it is a perfect fit to Ali’s unique laid back style soulful voice. Ali made a lot of news recently due to one of the songs from her album “Nayoungee” that mentioned a brutal rape incident in 2008. Subsequently, Ali tearfully revealed that she was a rape victim as well in the past.
This is our last music chart of 2011. Instead, we are going to bring you our seventh annual Soompi Gayo Awards. The nominees have already been announced a few days ago. Be sure to vote for your favorite artists for the Top 10 Artists Of 2011. The result will be announced on December 31. Meanwhile, I am also going to announce my personal top 20 songs of 2011 next week. Stay tuned!
