Weekly K-Pop Music Chart 2012 - March Week 3
Two words can sum up this week’s music chart: Big Bang. The five-member group dominated our music chart this week in a fashion that has never been done before. Big Bang has six songs in the top 20, including three songs in the top 10, in addition to haveing the new No. 1 song “Blue” this week. Big Bang’s latest mini-album “Alive” has six tracks (aside from the “intro”) and each track is considered a title song. All six tracks are very popular and ranked in almost all of our chart sources. So, for the first time in our seven year chart history, an artist has six songs on the chart in the same week.
Big Bang’s three top 10 hits include “Blue” (No. 1), and the new new top 10 entries “Bad Boy” (No. 6), and “Fantastic Baby” (No. 8). In addition, three other Big Bang songs are just outside of the top 10: “Love Dust” (No. 11), “A’int No Fun” (No. 12), and Dae Sung‘s solo hit “Wings” (No. 17). Don’t be surprised if all six Big Bang songs are in the top 10 next week. They may be battling each other for the top spot!
“Blue” replaces miss A’s “Touch” as the new No. 1 song with a very impressive score of 986. Of the six Big Bang songs on the chart, “Blue” is the song with the most commercial appeal. It was also the first released single of the mini-album, so it is not surprising that “Blue” is ranked the highest this week.

THIS WEEK IN 2008:
In this segment, we go back in time to re-visit charts of the same week in past years. The Soompi Music Chart began in January 2005. At first we had only 20 songs and later expanded to 50 songs.
The popular choice for March Week 3 would have been Kara. They topped our chart in March Week 3 of 2009 with “Honey” and in 2010 with “Lupin”. However, we are going to cover another song because of its significance.
Prior to Kara’s 2-year reign on March Week 3, Brown Eyed Girls hit No. 1 with “L.O.V.E” in 2008. This was a career changing hit for the group. Before this song, Brown Eyed Girls was known as a ballad group with very good talent and voices. It was a gamble to switch to dance pop hits but Brown Eyed Girls’ are so talented they pull it off. Listeners started to pay attention to their colorful costumes and choreography and became fans. “L.O.V.E” was a retro style dance hit that was beginning to get popular at the time. It became the group’s first No. 1 song and the rest is history. Every subsequent album title songs Brown Eyed Girls released went to the top of the chart, and all four members Jea, Narsha, Ga In, and Miryo branched out to release solo hits.
The success of “L.O.V.E” also paves the way for this song’s songwriters Lee Min Soo and Kim Ina, as they have written many great K-Pop hit songs after “L.O.V.E”.
