Weekly K-Pop Music Chart 2012 – October Week 2

After coming very close the last two weeks, Orange Caramel’s “Lipstick” finally moves up to No. 1 this week. The trio are on the right side of a close call this week as they just won by two points over last week’s No. 1 song G-Dragon’s “Crayon.” It is the first ever No. 1 song for Orange Caramel.  The sub-group of After School has outdone the main group on this aspect, as After School is still looking for their first No. 1 on our chart, despite also coming close several times. Congratulations to Orange Caramel.

Rounding out the top three is Secret’s former No. 1 song “Poison.” The top three songs remain the same as last week, with just a change of position between the top two songs.

There are two new songs at the bottom of the top 10.  Hallyu mega star DBSK checks in at No. 9 with their latest hit “Catch Me.” DBSK is making their long awaited comeback since “Keep Your Head Down” early last year.  “Catch Me” is the title song from their sixth album of the same name. Written by Yoo Young Jin, this song is a trendy dance number with electronic sounds and orchestral melodies. The dub step melody line completes this awesome track.

Veteran singer Lee Seung Chul returns to the top 10 for the first time in a long time with “Amateur”.  Lee was a fixture in the top 10 in the early to mid 2000s but has been quiet the last few years.  We saw him participating on drama OSTs more often than his own album.  Amateur” is about always giving one’s best and facing challenges with passion and energy like an amateur.

THIS WEEK IN 2010:

2NE1 – 박수쳐 (Clap Your Hands)

Watch: MV

In this segment, we go back in time to re-visit charts of the same week in past years. The Soompi Music Chart began in January 2005. At first we had only 20 songs and later expanded to 50 songs.

The always creative YG Entertainment came up with an interesting idea back in 2010 on the promotion of 2NE1’s first full length album “To Anyone”.  Before then, artists select one title song on their album and focus on promoting that song.  “To Anyone” was the first K-Pop album to have multiple title songs promoted simultaneously on different media.  As I recalled, 2NE1 once performed “Can’t Nobody” on SBS Inkigayo, “Go Away” on KBS Music Bank, and “Clap Your Hands” on MBC Music Core in the same week.  This is very tough for the artists as they were used to practice their vocal and choreography on one song and kept fine tuning it during the promotional period.   This daunting task did not deter the very talented 2NE1.  Since then, many K-Pop albums have multiple title songs and artists are used to promote them at the same time.  “Clap Your Hands” is the song that was featured on our chart and it was No. 1 this week two years ago.
