SISTAR’s Hyorin and Soyu Volunteer in Liberia

It’s been recently revealed that SISTAR’s Hyorin and Soyu went on a volunteer trip to the country of Liberia for eight days and seven nights starting from March 31.

These two kind-hearted idols joined SBS’ “Hope TV” and Miral Welfare Foundation to visit a gravel quarry village in Monrovia, the capital city of Liberia. The villagers burn used tires all day long to weaken the ground to break apart the rocks. In the village where the standard of living falls far below world standards, the volunteers were surprised to learn that the children of the village have to work all day, unable to go to school, to earn less than 1 USD per day gathering the gravel.

Hyorin and Soyu worked with one family in particular that was surviving on one meal per day provided by the labor of the entire family. They helped the family gather the rocks and transport them in bags, often weighing 20 to 40 kilograms.

Soyu commented, “This place is dangerous for children to live in. It’s hard to breathe with all the smoke from the used tires.  The children are surviving the hard labor by taking painkillers every day and they are able to eat only one meal per day. I want to help find a way for the children here to be able to enjoy their childhood.”

The episodes featuring SISTAR’s trip to Liberia will be broadcast on May 10 and 11 on Hope TV SBS.
