[Soompi Music Chart] 2013 Half Year Top 10 K-Pop Songs

The first half of 2013 has passed and it is time to review the top K-Pop songs during this first six month period.

I did a summary scoring for the 26 weekly K-Pop music charts here at Soompi, based on the same scoring methods we use for the year end Soompi Gayo Awards: each song’s accumulated score is factored by its chart position, the weekly competition, and season of which it is released (with later releases getting more weights). Note that since the accumulated scoring is a running total, songs just released from late May to June may not score high enough even though they are popular. At year end, these songs will be reflected properly.

These are the ten most popular songs in the first half of 2013 according to our chart. All the songs were all big hits and deserved to be ranked.  The gender and category mix is pretty even as we have four male groups, four female groups, and two male soloists making the list.  Let’s find out whether your favorite singers are included.

Winning the top spot by a large margin is 4minute’s “What’s Your Name?”  This may be a mild surprise to some, but not so if you follow our chart.  “What’s Your Name?” was in our chart for nine weeks and spent six weeks in the top three, including three weeks at No. 1. It is the only song to score over 6000 points and is an early candidate for our year end Song Of The Year award. “What’s Your Name?” is still currently on our charts, but will soon be replaced by 4minute’s new song “Is It Poppin?”

Coming in at a distant second is SISTAR19’s “Gone Not Around Any Longer” which was the biggest hit in the first quarter.  This song spent 14 weeks on the chart and was also a three time champion. SISTAR is currently promoting their latest hit “Give It To Me,” but that song is still just getting popular and has not accumulated enough points to rank here.

Both the top two songs are written by Brave Brothers, who had many other hit songs in the first half of 2013. Aside from these two songs, Brave Brothers also placed a third song in the top 10.

No. 3 is another hit song from earlier in the year.  It is from hip-hop duo Bae Chi Gi’s “Shower Of Tears” featuring the vocals of Ailee.  This song is benefited from its early release and spent a 12 weeks on our chart, including two weeks at No. 1 and two weeks at No. 2.  It is definitely the biggest hit of Bae Chi Gi’s career.

Girls’ Generation’s “I Got A Boy” is at No. 4.  Many fans expect this song to be ranked in the top three but fell short.  Due to their busy schedule worldwide and also individual members’ commitments, Girls’ Generation only promoted “I Got A Boy” briefly.  If they had promoted this song for longer, it should have been ranked higher.  Still, “I Got A Boy” spent 14 weeks on our chart with two weeks at No. 1.

CN Blue’s “I’m Sorry” is the No. 5 song on our half year top 10. This song was released at the same time with Girls’ Generation’s “I Got A Boy” and only reached No. 2 on our chart. Overall, it spent 11 weeks on our chart with six weeks in the top five.

Other songs ranked in the half year top 10 are Teen Top’s “Miss Right” at No. 6, the third Brave Brothers written song . “Gentlemen,” PSY’s much anticipated follow up song to “Gangnam Style,” is at No. 7, perhaps falling short of expectation.  K.Will’s “Love Blossom” is at No. 8, SHINee’s “Dream Girl” is at No. 9, and Secret’s “Yoohoo” is at No. 10.

Congratulations to all the artists making our half year top 10.
