Kara’s Goo Hara and Kang Ji Young Shed Tears During “Radio Star”
MBC’s late night Wednesday variety show, “Golden Fishery – Radio Star” was never one for side skirting sensitive issues. They usually take the bulldozer approach to dealing with their guests and usually isn’t afraid of asking the tough questions. Unfortunately, the success and failure of such tactics depends on how their guests respond and this week it appears that “Radio Star’s” bulldozer approach hit a massive barrier as Kara’s Goo Hara and Kang Ji Young both shed tears during the course of Wednesday’s episode.
The September 4 airing of “Radio Star” featured Park Jin Young, Kara‘s Goo Hara, Han Seung Yeon, and Kang Ji Young as its guests. This isn’t the first time either party has appeared on the show, with Park Jin Young appearing in a much earlier episode of the show and Kara previously featuring in one of the first TV appearances after their group break up situation. Right from the outset, the program got off to a fiery start, saying that JYP should be called SJ instead after Suzy and calling Goo Hara the blue chip of the idol rumor world, calling her the “relationship-idol.”
Even after the introduction, the MCs continued to steam roll through the guests saying that they had nothing to talk about in regards to Park Jin Young besides the MV. Throughout all of this, the Kara members can be seen being very nervous and stiff. However, the MCs aren’t phased and mention how Goo Hara has one of the greatest titles for an idol, “eelationship-idol.” When asked what she thinks about this, Goo Hara answers back meekly, saying “To be honest, I don’t really know” with the MCs telling Park Jin Young to provide her with hope and courage.
After that initial banter, the show continues on and they talk about Park Jin Young for a bit before eventually moving back to Goo Hara’s relationship. They start off by saying that Goo Hara was scared about appearing on “Radio Star.” They attack her on this point as well, saying that there is a typical type of person that is fearful of “Radio Star” with Kyuhyun telling her that “A guilty conscience needs no accuser.”
The MCs ask her which questions she is most worried about. Goo Hara responds back by saying “relationships” and then the MCs respond that that is too general of a word and ask her which relationship they should avoid. Kyuhyun continues to say that Goo Hara is the relationship idol before Goo Hara angrily responds with a no while throwing a drink bottle towards his direction.
Goo Hara’s concern is that constantly mentioning this would result in strange articles being posted about it. MC Kim Gura responds that if articles keep getting posted about it then the public will eventually lose interest in it. He continues on by saying that it appears that her relationship wasn’t all that passionate. Goo Hara responds that because they’ve been active in Japan for so long and because they’ve all been away overseas a lot and then proceeds to say “That is all.”
The conversation eventually moves on to MC Kyuhyun. Kara talks about how Kyuhyun came to their waiting room to greet them and how Goo Hara asked him to go a little easy on them and not talk about their private lives, but that promise clearly went straight out the window the moment the recording started. Kyuhyun then throws out a massive curveball saying that he could finish off Goo Hara if he opens his mouth. Goo Hara angrily gets up and then states that he too can’t hold his head up high.
Goo Hara then mentions that this is making her tear up before actually crying for real. The MCs clearly get flustered and Kyuhyun tries to quickly defuse the issue by saying that it was a joke. Goo Hara mentions that she is “really angry” and continues to cry in front of the flustered MCs.
Kyuhyun at this point is clearly flustered at this point and remains silent while the other MCs try to defuse the situation by joking about how “Radio Star” has a crying history- a list of stars that have cried on the show. Kim Gura continues to try to defuse the situation by jokingly acknowledging Kyuhyun as his successor in terms of making biting remarks. Kyuhyun finally states that he actually knows nothing about Goo Hara, to which Hara playful asks him if he has been lying on air then. At this point the mood of the set appears to return to normal and they continue on with the show. However, the calm only lasts for a little while before the show adds another star to their growing list of guests that have cried on the show.
Later on the MCs start to talk about how Kara are massive stars in Japan and how they receive special treatment over there. The topic then moves on to how Kang Ji Young can make the whole country flip on its head by showing off her cutesy acts. Kang Ji Young says that’s not really the case. The MCs continue to say her cutesy act is the craze of Japan and they eventually ask her to show it off on the show as well. Ji Young initially tries to avoid doing it by saying she initially did it in Japanese. However, the MCs continue to ask her to show off her cutesy act.
Ji Young initially appears to be doing it before asking them why they keep telling her she’s cute when she isn’t. Kim Gura then loudly tells her that if she herself doesn’t even know (If she is cute or not) then who else would. Kim Gura continues to ask her to show it off but Ji Young continues to say she can’t do it before eventually shaking her head and saying she doesn’t want to do it.
The MCs at this point seem to admit defeat and they mention how she might start crying if they keep asking her. At this point Kang Ji Young once again says that she really isn’t cute and yet they keep asking her. At this point Kang Ji Young actually begins to cry, which once again flusters the MCs with Kyuhyun lambasting his own MC team saying that they shouldn’t have done this. Goo Hara tries to explain that it has been awhile since they’ve been on a Korean variety show and Ji Young continues to tearfully mention how they kept asking her to act cute when she isn’t. Once again, everyone tries to defuse the situation and the show eventually moves onto Park Jin Young before finally ending the show.
As part of their ending, they ask Kang Ji Young if variety shows should now not ask her to act cute in their shows. Kang Ji Young replies in the affirmative and Kim Gura, half jokingly, replies that she will act cute if Yoo Jae Suk asks her to.
Opinions about the episode have been rather polarising. Initial responses were that the MCs might have gone too far with their remarks and that they should have expected a situation like this could occur. However, opinions began to shift towards the other side with some people stating that Kara was discriminating in terms of programs. This became even more prominent, especially in light of Kim Gura’s comment about Yoo Jae Suk, when someone found a scene from an older episode of “Happy Together Season 3” featuring Kara. During this episode MC Yoo Jae Suk asked Kang Ji Young to do something cutesy and she did it without any hesitation. There is also the opinion that given the show’s reputation, the guest should have expected these sort of questions to come up and that Kara acted like they did was being disrespectful towards the show and the MCs. To be noted, however, is that Goo Hara stated on “Radio Star” that it has been a while since the group has been on a variety program in Korea. Whatever the case, we’ll leave you with the Youtube videos of the two scenes in questions.
