Weekly K-Pop Music Chart 2013 – September Week 4

A mild surprise at the top this week as a hip-hop ballad “Stupid In Love” by Sistar’s Soyu and rapper Mad Clown made a 21-spot jump all the way to become our new No. 1 song.

Even more shocking is the margin of victory over former chart toppers Kara’s “Damaged Lady” and Sunmi’s “24 Hours,” which were No. 2 and 3 respectively this week. “Stupid In Love” was the only song to score over 900 points this week, and is 140 points more than “Damaged Lady.” “Stupid In Love” is the most consistently ranked song across all our sources, and just won its first music program on MBC’s Music Core this weekend.

This is not the first time Soyu has appeared as a vocalist on a hip-hop song. “Officially Missing You 2,” her collaboration with Geeks last year, was also a top 10 hit. Unheralded rapper Mad Clown is known as Korea’s Eminem. “Stupid In Love” is written by famous songwriter Kim Do Hoon, lyrics by Min Yeon Jae who recently become a singer/rapper himself. The song is about a girl who is hurt by love and a bad boy who is full of hateful words.

G-Dragon is sitting just outside of the top three again with “Black” at No. 4 and “Crooked” at No. 5.  These two songs were winners at M!Countdown and SBS Inkigayo last week. Again both songs are not ranked across all charts. It becomes a problem with multiple title songs promoting at the same time in different networks. Even if we add maximum points to either songs’ missing scores, each would still be well behind “Stupid In Love.”

Aside from “Stupid In Love,” there are three other brand new songs in the top 10 this week. Moving up 12 spots to No. 6 is “Had Enough Parties” from none other than the famous Park Jin Young (JYP). Stepping out of his CEO/producer suit and back onto the stage as a singer, JYP returns with his tenth album “Halftime.”  Title song “Had Enough Parties” is a philosophical song about JYP’s thoughts on the objective of life. The melody incorporates hip hop and R&B with electronic piano.

Scoring her third top ten song while solidifying her credential as a front runner for this year’s best new artist is Lim Kim’s “Voice,” coming from her second mini-album “Her Voice.”  Written by Yoon Jong Shin, “Voice” features top rapper, Swings. This song is expected to show another side of “trendy.” It holds lyrics about reminiscing about an ex-lover. This week “Voice” moves up eight spots to No. 8.

Up one spot to No. 10 is an all-female duet “If You Loved Me” between two great vocalists: Zi-A and Davichi’s Lee Hae Ri.  Composed by Minuki, it is a traditional acoustic ballad number with lyrics about being unable to forget one’s ex-lover.  Both artists sing with great emotions in this song.
