MBC’s newly minted Monday-Tuesday drama “Empress Ki” is off to a good start.

The premiere episode of “Empress Ki” recorded 11.1% ratings, according to Nielsen Korea. This was 1.8% higher than its SBS competition, “Suspicious Housekeeper,” which gathered 9.3%. KBS’ “Future Choice” placed third with 6.5% in ratings.

The first episode of “Empress Ki” drew surprise and praise for its mix of action, romance, and comedy, as well as skipping over the childhood backstory that is often expected from a 50-episode sageuk. It delved straight into the tumultuous life of its main characters, kicking the drama off with high energy.

“Empress Ki” draws the life of the Ki Seung Nyang (played by Ha Ji Won), a Goryeo woman who becomes the empress of Yuan, and the political strife between the two dynasties. It also stars actors Ji Chang Wook and Joo Jin Mo, who play Emperor Huizong (Ta Hwan) of Yuan and King Chyunhye (Wang Yoo) of Goryeo, respectively. “Empress Ki” airs Mondays-Tuesdays on MBC at 10 PM KST.
