Weekly K-Pop Music Chart 2014 – April Week 2

Lim Chang Jung repeats as No. 1 for the second week in a row with “Ordinary Song.”  In another wide open week last week in which different songs were winning on various music shows, “Ordinary Song” was clearly the most consistent song amongst music charts and was able to win again.  Congratulations to Lim Chang Jung.

Moving up three spots to No. 2 is Orange Caramel’s “Catallena.”  This song dropped to No. 5 last week and was able to rebound three spots up to second this week, just ten points below “Ordinary Song.”  Historically, Orange Caramel’s songs have done well and also fared better than After School’s songs on our chart.  This time is no exception.  Let see if “Catallena” can move up to the top spot next week.

There are four new songs in the top 10, all by non-idol artists.  Including Lim Chang Jung’s No. 1 song, half of the top 10 this week are songs by non-idols, showing that Kpop music is not only idol dominated.

Right below the top two songs we found veteran female soloist Lee Sun Hee’s “Meet Him Among Them,” moving up 20 spots to No. 3.  Lee Sun Hee started her career in 1985, before many of today’s idol artists are born.  Most of us know her being the vocal teacher of Lee Seung Gi.  Her latest hit “Meet Him Among Them” is the title song of her 15th album “Serendipity,” her first studio album in five years.  “Meet Him Among Them” is a trendy ballad written by veteran hitmaker Park Geun Tae.  It has a simple melody and minimal arrangement.  The song brings out Lee Sun Hee’s deep vocals.

Moving up 12 spots to No. 4 is hip-hop duo Bae Chi Gi’s latest hit “Dduraeyo.”  Bae Chi Gi scored their first chart topping hit last year with “Shower Of Tears.”  This time they come back with a listener friendly R&B style hip-hop song written by a new group 3B.  One of 3B’s member Angli is also the featured vocalist of this song.  “Dduraeyo” is about a heartbroken man running through the streets in Seoul at night to comfort himself.

Up 15 spots to No. 6 is Park Hyo Shin’s “Wild Flower.”  This song won on MBC’s Music Core last week.  Park Hyo Shin wrote this song himself.  It has a piano melody and an elegant orchestral sound.  Park Hyo Shin’s trademark husky vocal is displayed throughout the song and becoming more powerful towards the end.

The last new song in the top 10 is a surprise hit from a faceless singer Bro.  So far there is very little information about him.  But his song “That Kind Of Guy” has become a big hit without any promotion.  It topped the GAON Chart a week ago and also ranked high on many internet charts.  The MV of this song portrays the lyrics like it was part of a Kakao conversation.  This ballad has also created controversies as its lyrics were criticized of being offensive to woman.  Still, it manages to climb four spots to No. 9 on our chart this week.
