“Coming of Age” Day: K-Pop Idols Celebrating 20 Years of Age
Twenty. It’s an exciting age in Korea when a child becomes an adult, and in this country where age defines many aspects of your status and role, that transition into adulthood is celebrated nationwide.
Koreans celebrate “Coming of Age” every year on the third Monday of May, which this year is today, May 19. It’s a special day in which people who are turning 20 years-old in 2014 are celebrated and given gifts (rose, perfume, kiss) for becoming “adults” in society. The law changed last year so that people who turn 19 years old are considered “adults,” which means that people born in 1995 and after July 1 in 1994 all celebrate “Coming of Age” day today. There are a lot of idols out there who are celebrating their coming of age on May 19, so let’s take a look.
