Weekly K-Pop Music Chart 2014 – July Week 2

Our weekly music chart has undergone a major change starting this week.  To make our chart more reflective of what is hot internationally, we are introducing “Soompi Airplay” as 15% of our chart score.  “Soompi Airplay” reflects the relevance of each artist by measuring the frequency of their coverage on Soompi each week.  We feel that this adds our own flavor to the music chart rather than just sampling major Korean charts.  With this change, we have reassigned our chart weights of other sources as well: GAON is now a 25% source while Billboard Korea has been eliminated.  Major internet charts (15%) and TV Music Programs (45%) remain unchanged.

With this new change there are a lot of movements on top of our chart this week.  BEAST is riding their luck with the song “Good Luck” moving up two spots to take over as our new No. 1 song.  This song has won on all music shows for one or more weeks.  This is the fourth No. 1 song of BEAST on our chart.  They previously hit No. 1 with “Shadow,” “Fiction,” and “Breath.”  Congratulations to BEAST.

Moving up six spots to second place is AOA’s new song “Short Hair.”  Perhaps the breakout artist so far in 2014, AOA scored their first top 10 song on our chart earlier this year with “Miniskirt,” which went to No. 3. The girls already did one spot better this time.  Let see if they will score their first No. 1 song on our chart next week.

Rounding out the top three is Taeyang’s “Eye, Nose, Lips.”  This song spent the past three weeks at No. 1 and it drops two spots to No. 3 this week.

There are three new songs in the top ten this week.  Right below the top three is K.Will’s latest hit “Day 1,” moving up 13 spots to No. 4.  This is the title song of his fifth mini-album “One Fine Day.”  It is a mid-tempo song about an ordinary guy who wants to win over his long time crush.  “Day 1” won its first music show on Show Champion this week and is among the top songs on all Korean charts.  It has a good chance to challenge for our top spot next week.

Moving up 17 spots to No. 8 is rookie female quartet Mamamoo with their first solo top 10 hit “Mr. Ambiguous.” Mamamoo scored their first top 10 hit on their debut song “Peppermint Chocolate,” a duet with K.Will earlier this year.  They also have collaboration hits with Bumkey and Geeks as well.  Now they are finally on their own and release their first mini-album. “Mr. Ambiguous” is an R&B song about a woman warning a man who is ambiguous and isn’t honest about his feelings. Mamamoo impresses listeners with their mature and soulful vocals. They are one of the early candidates for this year’s top new artists.

Moving up 11 spots and scoring their first top 10 hit is GOT7 with “A.” This is the title song from the group’s second mini-album. Written by JYP, “A” is an up-tempo R&B dance song with a hip-hop rhythm. It is about a guy who tells the girl he likes that he knows she likes him too, and asks her not to hide her feelings.
