"Misaeng" Director Pushed Product Placement Towards the End of the Drama
“Misaeng” director Kim Won Suk explained the marked increase in product placement in the drama.
On December 18 at the CGV Chungdam Cine City, director Kim Won Suk and writer Jung Yoon Jung were interviewed together about ongoing tvN hit drama “Misaeng.”
When asked about the increase in product placement, especially in comparison to the first half of the drama, Kim Won Suk gave an unexpected reply, “To be honest, I purposely held off on product placement until the latter half of the drama because I didn’t want it to interfere with the story. But there were so many that we had held off on that [the products] were just everywhere.”
He continued, “The reason why people barely noticed the product placement before was because there barely was any, save for mostly coffee and copy paper, which is fairly easy to incorporate given the office setting of the drama. Rewatching recent episodes, I found moments where the product placement was really obvious, and I thought to myself, ‘I made a mistake.’”
“Misaeng” follows the story of Jang Geu Rae who, after dedicating his entire life to baduk but failing to make it as a professional player, must come to terms with the harsh reality of life. Despite being a cable network program, the drama has consistently recorded stellar viewership ratings, most recently hitting 9.5%.
On December 20 at 8:30 p.m. KST tvN will air “Misaeng’s” twentieth and final episode.
