North Korean Girl Group Moranbong Heads to Beijing
Just when we thought we’d seen it all, North Korea’s leader Kim Jong Un sent his personal girl band Moranbong to Beijing for a week of performances.
On December 10, the United Nations Security Council discussed human rights violations in the northern half of the Korean peninsula, a discussion that could earn North Korea a referral to the International Criminal Court. As China is North Korea’s only ally on the Security Council, the decision to send the girl band to Beijing is one meant to help improve relations between the two countries. Ties between North Korea and China have been strained since Kim Jong Un came into power in 2011.
Moranbong was formed by Kim Jong Un himself in 2012, and the girls sing songs that only praise the North Korean leader.
