JYP Explains the Circumstances Behind Tzuyu's Apology
JYP Entertainment releases an official statement today, explaining TWICE member Tzuyu‘s video statement. This seems to be in response to the recent DDos attack on its website and to accusations that the agency forced Tzuyu to apologize.
The agency explains that because Tzuyu is a minor, they waited until her parents arrived in Korea and discussed things with Tzuyu. Together, they decided to release a statement from Tzuyu. JYP emphasized that “a company cannot and should not force a belief on a person,” and that no such act occurred in the matter with Tzuyu. It concluded that Tzuyu’s parents desired that this controversy die down quickly and they asked that many continue to support Tzuyu.
Before this official statement, the Korean media was reporting on a comment that Tzuyu’s mother made to a Taiwanese news source in which she said, “I hope that this situation will die down quickly so that my daughter can joyfully sing and dance again.” She also thanked everyone for their concern. The source also said her mom was in Korea taking care of her daughter.
In related news, it is being reported that Taiwanese netizens are planning to hold demonstrations this coming January 24 at Taipei to denounce singer Huang An, who is cited as the person who sparked the controversy.
Taiwanese singer Huang An, who opposes Taiwanese independence from China, described Tzuyu as a Taiwanese independence supporter after seeing her hold the Taiwanese flag to show her nationality during the internet broadcast/ variety show “My Little Television.” With the Taiwanese presidential elections taking place, the issue of Tzuyu’s nationality became more and more controversial with Taiwanese and Chinese netizens, politicians, and media taking sides. Since then, Tzuyu, TWICE, and 2PM have had their activities in China affected, JYP, Tzuyu, and Park Jin Young, head of JYP, apologized to China, and the JYP website was attacked by hackers who did not like the fact that Tzuyu apologized.
