The immensely popular KBS drama “Descendants of the Sun” brought tears to many when it ended last night, April 14 KST, with its 16th episode as fans said goodbye to the characters and story they grew to love.

The drama bowed out with a bang, breaking its own record by recording a 38.8 nationwide viewership rating, according to Nielsen Korea. This was a whopping 4 percent jump from the previous night’s episode. The finale also recorded 44.2 percent in Seoul, and 41.6 in the capital area. It was the most viewed among women in their 40s.

“Descendants of the Sun” started out strong right from the start, with a 14.3 percent rating for its first episode, in a time when dramas are lucky to hit even two digits with their ratings. After only three episodes, “Descendants of the Sun” broke 20 percent. It broke 30 percent with its ninth episode. The drama became the first drama since MBC’s “The Moon Embracing the Sun” in 2012 to break the 30 percent mark.

The average rating for the entire series was 28.6 percent.

“Descendants of the Sun” is not entirely over, with KBS airing three special episodes over three days starting April 20. KBS’s next Wednesday-Thursday drama, “Master: God of Noodles,” premieres the following week on April 27.

Dramas that aired at the same time last night, MBC’s “Goodbye Mr. Black” and SBS’s “Please Come Back Mister,”  aired two episodes each back to back since Wednesday’s episodes were canceled due to the election coverage. “Goodbye Mr. Black” recorded 3.5 and 3.8 percent, and “Please Come Back Mister” recorded 4.6 and 2.6 percent. “Please Come Back Mister” also aired its finale episode last night.
