5 Reasons You'll Love

The Starry Night, The Starry Sea” stars Bea Hayden as Shen Luo, who is tired of the city life and decides to move back to her small island hometown to start a new life. Once she’s back in town, she encounters Wu Ju Lan (Feng Shao Feng), a merman who is in search of his spiritual pearl, which was stolen due to the betrayal of his best friend. The pearl is needed to keep him alive and he will die in three months if it is not found. Wu Ju Lan isn’t the only one looking for the pearl; An Zuo (Sunny Wang) from the Black Wizards organization also wants it. Wu Ju Lan ends up befriending Shen Luo and moves into her home while continuing to search for his pearl.

It is important to note this is a drama adaptation of the novel of the same name by Tong Hua. She is also the author of the novel “Bu Bu Jin Xin,” which had two very popular drama adaptations: “Scarlet Heart” and “Scarlet Heart: Goryeo.”

If you’re a fan of fantasy romance dramas, “The Starry Night, The Starry Sea” is for you! Here’s my list of the top five reasons why you should check it out. Happy watching!

Merman Wu Ju Lan

We’ve always seen stories about mermaids, so it’s refreshing to see a love story between a merman and a human. Feng Shao Feng stars as our jaded thousand-year-old merman, Wu Ju Lan. A majority of the time, he has a serious deadpan look on his face, or, according to how Shen Luo describes him, he’s a total woodblock. However, once our hero falls in love Shen Luo, he always breaks into a warm smile. Your heart can’t help but flutter when you see the way he looks at her with such a loving gaze and treats her so tenderly. Feng Shao Feng is just so dreamy. Swoons!

The beautiful and confident heroine

Bea Hayden is just drop-dead gorgeous. Every time I see her onscreen, I’m always in awe at how beautiful she is. Needless to say, her character Shen Luo is shamelessly confident about her looks and isn’t afraid to let those around her know it, especially Wu Ju Lan. I love how kind, optimistic, and easy-going Shen Luo is, but she isn’t afraid to standup and fight for her man (or in this case, merman). She’ll physically fight against the baddies and all the thirsty girls who want to date Wu Ju Lan. I especially found it hilarious after Shen Luo found out Wu Ju Lan is a merman and kept making fish jokes. And I died when she asked about his dating history and if he had ever dated an octopus before.

BFF Goals

Another favorite character of mine is Jiang Yi Sheng (Huang Ming), Shen Luo’s childhood best friend. Besides our OTP, I really enjoy the scenes with our BFFs. Just like Shen Luo, Yi Sheng is very confident and slightly on the narcissistic side when it comes to his looks. It makes sense that they’re friends; birds of a feather flock together. It’s rare to find a male childhood friend character who isn’t in love with the lead female character (he’s in love with Liang Liang, played by Wang Meng Li). In fact, out of everyone, Yi Sheng is the biggest shipper of our OTP. He’s the best friend that every girl needs. He’s always there to lend an ear to Shen Luo when she’s having problems and tries his best to cheer her up. In fact, he always goes out of his way to help Shen Luo and is always looking out for her best interests. I would describe their friendship a bit like Dumb and Dumber, because he always gives the worst relationship advice, which always lands Shen Luo in the most hilarious and embarrassing situations.

Heart-fluttering romance

This drama doesn’t skimp on the romance department. If you’re anything like me, I practically live for the romantic moments when watching dramas. The romance coupled by the breathtaking scenery in the drama is just icing on the cake. Bea Hayden and Feng Shao Feng have fantastic chemistry, and it shows through their loving and tender gazes. One of my favorite romantic moments was from episode 10, when Wu Ju Lan explained to Shen Luo that seashells were once symbols of nobility, but now a lot of people treat them as tokens of love. He then takes a seashell and places it in her hand. He indirectly confesses that he’s in love with her!

The beautiful OST

“The Starry Night, The Starry Sea” also boasts a wonderful OST with emotional lyrics that tug the heartstrings, conveyed beautifully by many talented singers, including veteran Taiwanese singer Jeff Chang. My personal favorite is the opening theme song by Jin Zhiwen. I especially love these lyrics from the song: “I realized that as long as I’m by your side, even the bleakest days have romantic skies…. The light radiating at the moment when we meet is brighter than the galaxy.
