Can Male Idols Get Away with More Than Female Idols?

It’s no surprise to those who know about the Korean culture that there is a strict separation in music and performance of what is acceptable. Songs will be banned from radio play for lyrics, and performances will have to be changed when some aspects of the dance are deemed unsuitable. But is this equal when it comes to gender?

SHINee Holds Fanmeet in Tokyo

SHINee has been making their presence known lately in Japan after debuting only a month or so ago with their remake of “Replay”. On July 28th SHINee held their first fan meet event for Japanese Shawols at the Tokyo Nakano Sun Plaza. There the SHINee boys performed their Japanese debut hit “Replay” (also known as “君 は 僕 の Everything”/ “You are my Everything” in Japanese) along with three of their other popular tracks. Also while there they announced to the fans their upcoming release of, “Juliette” scheduled for August 29th. To which fierce main vocalist Jong Hyun indulged the crowd by commenting on the group’s upcoming single, “It’s a song that will make your heart race.” The fan meet tour continues as the SHIN-ing idols visit other cities throughout Japan finishing up on August 11th.

Big Bang Ranks #2 on Billboard’s "Next Big Sound 25" Chart

Big Bang, as their name suggests, is certainly no strangers to radical accomplishments in music. They have had much success throughout the years as they’ve released groundbreaking albums, with stellar comebacks that have been well received by the public in Korea as well as worldwide. When Big Bang released their fourth mini-album back in February the group charted with their hit mini as well as their title track, “Tonight”. One of the charts the group topped was none other than the Billboard World Charts and that was without any promotions outside of Asia.

2NE1’s Ranking on iTunes Charts Worldwide

Within just a day of 2NE1’s second mini-album being released worldwide they already have been showing an impact on various music charts. Throughout the past few months the group had achieved five consecutive All-Kill status on the domestic Korean music charts with Park Bom’s solo “Don’t Cry”, “Lonely”, “I Am the Best”, “Hate You”, and finally “Ugly” within the span of a few days of each single’s release. Currently the most notable accomplishment is the response that the ladies are receiving internationally on iTunes. The rankings for 2NE1, at the time of this article, are as follows: number one in Sweden’s albums category, number two in Italy and the United States, three in New Zeland’s Electronic charts, four in Belgium’s albums ranking, six in Australia’s Electronic charts, seven in the Netherlands, and tenth place in the United Kingdom.
