Weekly K-Pop Music Chart 2011 - April Week 3

Listen to the Top 50 songs here.

CN Blue scores two points higher than last week and continue its dominance on the chart with “Intuition”.  They will be challenged by Kim Tae Woo next week as his new song “Echo” moved up quickly to No. 2.  Despite the big gap in scoring between the two songs, it is expected to be a lot closer next week.

There are four new songs in the top 10 this week. The most notable one is the high debut of 4minute’s “Mirror Mirror” at No. 9. This song is certainly going to move up to the top 5 next week and perhaps even challenging for the top spot soon. While 4mintue debuted two years ago they have only recently released their first full length album “4minutes Left”.

After a four year absence, Yangpa returns to the top 10 with “It Hurts”. The song is composed by Kim Do Hoon (who wrote four songs in the top 10 this week), and lyrics by fellow singer Wheesung, who is also in the top 10 this week. Yangpa’s songs are always doing well on the chart but she will face very strong competition.

Eun Ji Won’s project group Clover has the biggest mover this week as their song “La Vida Loca” jumps 28 spots to No. 8.  Clover’s other members are Gilme and Tyfoon (formerly known as Mr. Tyfoon).  With so many pop songs in the top 10, La Vida Loca really stands out with a mixture of hip-hop, R&B, and funk.

Finally, After School’s sub-unit Orange Caramel is back again with “Bangkok City”. The trio shed their cute girl image this time and have become disco divas. We haven’t heard too many pure disco beat songs in k-pop lately and this song is one that will get fans up and dancing.

THIS WEEK IN 2005:

In this segment we go back in time to re-visit charts of the same week in past years. Soompi music chart begins in January 2005. At first we had only 20 songs and later expanded to 50 songs.

April week 3 in 2005: When we think about rock ballad groups in k-pop, veteran Boo Hwal comes to mind. MC The Max was also were really popular those days. Buzz was a relatively unknown group at that time. Their first album “Morning Of Buzz” did not produce any major hit songs. So their second album “Buzz Effect” released in March 2005 with little fanfare. It was a surprise that the title song “Coward” became very popular and jumped to No. 1 in just two weeks. “Coward” went on to spend four weeks at the top, with the third week of April being the last week on top. It was one of the top hit songs in 2005.  Meanwhile, “Buzz Effect” also spin two more hit songs “Thorn” and “A Trip To Discover Myself” and was one of the most successful albums in 2005. Lead singer Min Kyung Hoon gains a lot of female fans. Min eventually left the group to pursue a solo career and is a successful solo artist today.  Buzz re-grouped last year with a new singer and released the album “Fuzz Buzz”.

Let’s re-visit the MV of “Coward” here.
