Lee Young Ja Talks About Winning 2 Daesangs + Thanks Fellow Female Comedians
On January 11, Lee Young Ja appeared on KBS’s “Entertainment Weekly” to talk about her recent end-of-the-year victories.
Lee Young Ja was the first woman to win an Entertainment Awards Daesang at the KBS Entertainment Awards and then became the first woman to win two Daesangs at the MBC Entertainment Awards. She is also only the third person ever to win two entertainment Daesangs in one year.
During the “Entertainment Weekly” episode, Lee Young Ja thanked everyone watching and said, “After I received the award, my juniors called and texted me. They said that I was setting an example, that I was giving them hope, that it was a source of strength for them, that they were grateful, that they were going to follow in my footsteps. I only did my work as best as I could, but I was so moved to hear that it was a source of strength for my juniors.”
She continued, “The roots of my two Daesangs are in Kim Sook and Song Eun Yi. I really want to thank them. Our job is one where we have to wait for people to cast us. We have to wait a long time, but those two blazed a trail. When the broadcasting companies didn’t seek them out, they made their own channel and put their name out. Their hard work allowed me to bear fruit so I’m grateful.”
She then talked about her own hardships. “I’m not the typical ‘mom’s friend’s kid.’ I went through a lot of tough things, so if I can be a source of hope to the youth, then I’m happy. I think the toughest time was when I was trying to be a funny person but I was becoming a ridiculous one. I realized that I wasn’t funny, I was just ridiculous. I was in despair and hated myself at that point. A lot of people supported me then but Lee Sung Mi never let go of my hand. She listened to everything I had to say and cheered me on.”
