Son Seung Won's Prison Sentence For Driving Under The Influence Is Confirmed With No New Appeals

Son Seung Won’s sentence for causing an accident while driving under the influence of alcohol without a license has been confirmed as no additional appeals have been filed.

According to legal circles on August 25, Son Seung Won has not submitted any additional appeals for his prison sentence of one year and sixth months after the Seoul District Court ruled to uphold the sentence earlier this month. If an appeal is not filed in seven days after such a decision, the sentence is confirmed.

After receiving the prison sentence in his first trial, Son Seung Won appealed and submitted ten letters of apology during the appeal hearing. He stated, “I will repent for my sins during my military service,” and mentioned his panic disorder to ask for leniency. Meanwhile, the prosecution also appealed, asking for a harsher sentence. In August, the courts decided to uphold the original sentence.

Military service law dictates that receiving a sentence of at least one and a half years in prison will disqualify an individual from being eligible to serve in the military, which means Son Seung Won will be exempt from military service.

Son Seung Won was first caught driving under the influence in August 2018, when he crashed into a taxi with his blood alcohol content recorded at 0.21 percent. His driver’s license was revoked and while still under investigation, Son Seung Won drove under the influence again late December last year. His blood alcohol content was recored at 0.206 percent.
