The Korean-American film “Minari” has been nominated for a Golden Globe.

On February 3, the Hollywood Foreign Press Association (HFPA) announced the nominees for the 78th annual Golden Globe Awards.

The film “Minari” was nominated in the category for Best Motion Picture – Foreign Language. The other films nominated in this category include “Another Round” (Denmark), “La Llorona” (Guatemala/France), “The Life Ahead” (Italy), and “Two of Us” (France/USA). “Minari” is listed as being from the United States of America, but it is nominated in the Foreign Language category because much of the dialogue is in Korean.

There has been controversy over the decision to put “Minari” in the category for Foreign Language rather than in the category for Drama. In 2019, “Parasite,” which was the first Korean film to win the Palme d’Or at the Cannes Film Festival and later won Best Picture and three other awards at the 92nd Academy Awards, was also excluded from the Best Motion Picture – Drama category at the Golden Globes for the same reason that the film is not in English. However, while “Parasite” was a Korean production, “Minari” was produced and financed by American companies and the director and most of the cast and crew, with the exception of Han Ye Ri and Youn Yuh Jung, are all American.

Media outlets had previously speculated on the chance of veteran actress Youn Yuh Jung being nominated in the category for Best Performance by an Actress in a Supporting Role in Any Motion Picture. Currently, Youn Yuh Jung has won 20 awards as Best Supporting Actress for her role in “Minari” from film critics associations all over the United States. However, the final nominees for this category at the Golden Globes were Glenn Close (“Hillbilly Elegy”), Olivia Colman (“The Father”), Jodie Foster (“The Mauritanian”), Amanda Seyfried (“Mank”), and Helena Zengel (“News of the World”).

“Minari” is directed by Lee Isaac Chung and stars Steven Yeun, Han Ye Ri, Alan Kim, Noel Kate Cho, Youn Yuh Jung, and Will Patton. Based on the director’s real-life experiences, the film is about a family of South Korean immigrants who try to make a new life in rural America during the 1980s.
