6 C-Drama Actors Who Started Their Careers As Child Stars

In the world of Chinese entertainment, there are plenty of popular and talented Chinese celebrities. Did you know many of them actually got their start as child actors? Growing up in the spotlight, they’ve gained plenty of acting experience and learned how to exude charisma with their on-screen presence. Here’s a list of some former child actors who have now become bona fide leading actors and stars.

Yang Zi

Actress Yang Zi is most well-known for her leading roles in the dramas “Go Go Squid” and “Ashes of Love.” She made her acting debut at the age of seven in the 2002 drama “Ru Ci Chu Shan.” Later on, she impressed audiences in the historical drama “Xiaozhuang Epic” as the young Consort Donggo. However, it wasn’t until Yang Zi starred in the 2005 hit sitcom “Home With Kids” that she cemented her status as a child star and became a household name ever since.

After graduating from the prestigious Beijing Film Academy in 2014, Yang Zi’s popularity sharply rose following her role in the modern drama “Ode to Joy” and the historical fantasy drama “The Legend of Chusen,” which were both commercial hits. Yang Zi is currently filming the historical fantasy drama “Agarwood Like Crumbs” with Cheng Yi. Leo Wu

Our next former child actor is Leo Wu, who stole the audience’s hearts as Fei Liu in the critically acclaimed historical drama “Nirvana In Fire.” He began his entertainment career in 2002 as an advertising model and starred in over 50 commercials in the following two years. At seven years old, Leo Wu made his acting debut playing Nezha in the drama “The Legend and the Hero.”

Having grown up in front of the camera, Leo Wu is also known as the “Nation’s Little Brother.” He is currently studying at the Beijing Film Academy and has starred in many popular dramas like “Whirlwind Girl,” “The Legend of Qin,” “The Imperial Doctress,” “Sand Sea,” and “Fights Break Sphere.” Most recently, he starred in the hugely popular eSports drama “Cross Fire” with Lu Han and in the historical drama “The Long Ballad” with Dilraba Dilmurat. Presently, Leo Wu is starring in the ongoing drama “Our Times.”

Guan Xiao Tong

Next on our list is Guan Xiao Tong. Hailing from a family of actors, father Guan Shao Zeng and grandfather Guan Xue Zeng, she was encouraged from a young age to pursue her passion for the arts. She made her official acting debut in the 2001 drama “Yan Hai Chen Fu.” In 2003, she received critical acclaim for her role in the award-winning film “Nuan,” which garnered excellent reviews domestically and in Japan. Other notable works Guan Xiao Tong starred in include the films “The Promise,” Electric Shadows,” and “The Left Ear.”

The rising star has transitioned into adult roles in the last few years with dramas like “Untouchable Lovers,” “Sweet Combat,” and “Twenty Your Life On.” Guan Xiao Tong also passed another important milestone in her life after graduating from Beijing Film Academy last year in 2020. Niu Jun Feng

Actor Niu Jun Feng first received recognition in the supporting role of Yu Ban Shan in the insanely popular 2016 eSports romance drama “Love O2O.” Since then, Niu Jun Feng has gone on to take leading roles in dramas like “Dear Mayang Street” and “Your Highness, The Class Monitor.” Many do not know that he started his career at the age of 10 in the 2002 comedy film “Jia You Jiao Che” and continued acting ever since!

From a young age, Niu Jun Feng started learning Peking Opera, and later on he received direct admission to the National Academy of Chinese Theatre Arts. In 2019, Niu Jun Feng proved his talents after participating in the acting reality show “Everybody Standby” where he received high praises from Vicki Zhao and director Chen Kaige, leading him to be the final winner. Yang Mi

Our next star needs no special introduction, Yang Mi is a hugely popular and influential actress known for her roles in the dramas “Sword of Legends” and “Eternal Love” and the film series “Tiny Times.” Besides being a graduate of the Beijing Film Academy, she also established her own agency, Jay Walk Studios, that manages popular actors like Dilraba Dilmurat and Zhang Bin Bin.

Yang Mi stood out from other child actors with her sparkly round eyes, and at four years old, she starred in her first historical drama “Tang Ming Huang” where she played the young Princess Xianyi. She also played Stephen Chow’s daughter in the Hong Kong comedy film “King of Beggars.” Growing up under the public eye, Yang Mi found great success in her entertainment career. Yang Mi has several upcoming dramas that fans can look forward to watching, including “She and Her Perfect Husband,” “Novoland: Pearl Eclipse,” and “Thank You, Doctor.”

Chen Xing Xu

Actor Chen Xing Xu got his big break starring in the popular 2019 historical drama “Goodbye My Princess,” where he received amazing reviews for his incredible portrayal of the highly complex character Gu Xiao Wu/Li Cheng Yin. The talented actor is also a graduate of the prestigious Central Academy of Drama. He was scouted as a child at a park when he was three years old and began shooting commercials. Chen Xing Xu made his acting debut at the age of four in the drama “A Passionate Life.”

Other notable dramas he was featured in as a child actor include “You Are My Life,” “Golden Marriage,” “The Door to the Wind,” and “Sparkling Red Star.” Chen Xing Xu gained attention and popularity in 2017 after playing the antagonist role of Yang Kang in the drama “The Legend of the Condor Heroes,” an adaptation of Jin Yong’s novel of the same name.
