Cha Hak Yeon Talks About VIXX And Help He Got From Hyuk, His Agency CEO So Ji Sub, And

VIXX’s Cha Hak Yeon (N) recently sat down for a series of interviews upon the end of his tvN drama “Bad and Crazy.”

“Bad and Crazy” is a tvN drama from the writer and director of OCN’s “The Uncanny Counter” about a capable but corrupt detective named Ryu Soo Yeol (Lee Dong Wook) and a crazy but righteous person named K (Wi Ha Joon). Cha Hak Yeon played the principled and compassionate police officer Oh Kyung Tae.

Although Cha Hak Yeon debuted as N, the leader of VIXX, in 2012, he has been more active as an actor in recent years. In the interview, he said, “My resolve to do my best, my faith that I can do better than I did last time, these are the things that drive me. I always act with sincerity and do my best so that my feelings can transmit across the screen to the viewers. I’m going to work busily this year as well.”

Asked about what genres he wanted to try, he said, “I want to try a historical drama. I made a special appearance as Seung Yool in ‘Secret Royal Inspector & Joy‘ and that was my first time trying historical acting. I was nervous but also excited, and fortunately people told me that it suited me well, so that gave me strength. It was really fun to play characters in a time period I’ve never experienced, so if I get the chance, I’d like to try a traditional historical drama.”

2022 marks VIXX’s 10th debut anniversary. He said, “The VIXX members are always cheering each other on and monitoring each other’s work. Nothing has been decided with regards to a comeback. I think that right now is a time when I have to focus on acting more than performing. I want to be acknowledged as the actor Cha Hak Yeon.”

He shared, “Our youngest member, Hyuk, contacted me late at night after the end of episode 9 of ‘Bad and Crazy.’ He said that he’d seen the behind-the-scenes video and comforted me, saying that I’d worked really hard. It made me feel stronger and grateful and I got a little choked up. There was a time when I always thought of him as a little kid, but now he’s old enough to think of his hyungs, and I was really grateful.”

He added that Yang Hee Seung, the writer of the drama “Familiar Wife,” had also contacted him about his role in “Bad and Crazy.” “I was so grateful and moved when she told me she was enjoying the drama and that my acting was really good. She’s the person who created my role in ‘Familiar Wife,’ so to think that she was watching another project I was in years later and even cheering me on made me emotional.”

After his discharge from the military, Cha Hak Yeon left Jellyfish Entertainment and signed with 51K, an agency founded by actor So Ji Sub. He named So Ji Sub as his role model, saying, “After moving to this agency, I’d had the thought that I wanted to become an actor like So Ji Sub. He thinks deeply about whether or not to take a role, and when he does, he respects the director and the people on set, and takes care of the cast and crew members. When I heard that, I thought he was really cool. I also think it’s amazing how he manages his body and mind while preparing for a project.”

About working on “Bad and Crazy,” he said, “If you see the behind-the-scenes videos, you’ll see that I joke around with Lee Dong Wook a lot, but he really took care of me a lot on set. It wasn’t in the videos, but whenever we had to film emotional scenes or scenes that were important to Kyung Tae, he would take care so that I could immerse myself in the emotions, and he’d quietly approach me and comfort me.”

Cha Hak Yeon added that he regretted not being able to film often with Wi Ha Joon. “K isn’t visible to Kyung Tae’s eyes, so there wasn’t a chance for me to act opposite Wi Ha Joon. We would talk about everyday things whenever we met on set. When I met Han Ji Eun on set, she would always greet me brightly, and took care of me on set, so I was able to have a comfortable time thanks to her.”
