Weekly K-Pop Music Chart 2013 - August Week 1
For the fourth straight week we have a new No. 1 song.
Despite staying quiet for the first half of 2013, Ailee picks up where she was left off last year and scores her second chart topping hit with “U&I.” This song was No. 1 on KBS Music Bank’s K-Chart two weeks in a row. Congratulations to Ailee.
There are four new songs in the top 10 this week. We start at No. 2 with Infinite’s latest hit “Destiny.” This song won on MNet, MBC, and SBS last week but were behind “U&I” on GAON, Billboard Korea, and most internet charts. Infinite is released a single album ahead of their World Tour this month. The title track “Destiny” is a dance hit written by Rphabet. The music video has two versions and it is filmed in Universal Studios in the U.S. This week “Destiny” moves up 12 spots to No. 2.
Rounding out the top three is last week’s No. 1 A Pink’s “NoNoNo.” This song together with this week’s chart topper “U&I” are both written by Shinsadong Tiger and Kupa, giving the team two of the top three songs this week.
Moving up 22 big spots to No. 5 is BEAST’s “Shadow,” the title song from their second full length album “Hard To Love, How To Love.” BEAST had released two pre-released ballads “Will You Be Alright?” and “I’m Sorry” before their album release. “Shadow” is a moving track about how a man feels after his lover disappears like a shadow. It has strong beats and a beautiful piano melody. The song was co-composed, penned, and arranged by Kim Tae Joo and Beast’s own Yong Jun Hyung. “Shadow” has a good chance to challenge for the top spot next week.
Yoo Sung Eun of Voice Korea hits the top 10 on her debut hit “Be OK,” moving up nine spots to No. 6 this week. Known for her powerful voice throughout the competition, Yoo Sung Eun recently released her first mini-album “Be OK.” This song has a unique and complex melody in that it combines R&B, jazz, and dance into a genre, and also features Bae Chi Gi’s rapping. It shows both the powerful vocal of Yoo Sung Eun and a lighter side of her. Yoo Sung Eun will be one of the leading candidates for this year’s best new artist awards.
Another rookie poised to make it big is Kang Seung Yoon from Super Star K2. After the competition, he was signed to YG Entertainment and undergoes their vigorous training. Three years after the competition, Kang Seung Yoon finally makes his official debut with the single “It Rains.” Perfect to listen to under an umbrella on a rainy day, this rock ballad is full of emotion as shown through the singer’s vocals. It moves up 10 spots to No. 9 this week.
