Weekly K-Pop Music Chart 2013 – October Week 1

Soyu and Mad Clown’s “Stupid In Love” repeats as No. 1 this week with an even higher score than last week. This song’s consistency across all rankings again proves to be the difference.

G-Dragon finally has a song in the top three this week as “Crooked” seems to be the song that stands out from his other title songs. “Crooked” moves up three spots to No. 2, quickly closing the gap with “Stupid In Love.” As we mentioned in the last two weeks, G-Dragon had different songs ranked in different charts but not a single song is ranked across all charts. It is no longer the case this week as “Crooked” appears on all rankings.

This is a strange week on the chart. Both top two songs scored over 900 points. Then there is a big gap as no other songs even score above 700. The rest of the top 10 is wide open and we see five new songs.

Moving up eight spots to No. 4 and scoring their first ever top 10 hit is “Pretty Pretty” from rookie female group Ladies’ Code. Most of this year’s top rookies are soloists. Ladies’ Code is the first debutant group to have a top 10 song. “Pretty Pretty” is coming from their second mini-album of the same name. The song holds lyrics about standing tall and shouting how beautiful they are.

Ailee has her second top 10 hit of 2013 as “Higher” moves up 15 spots to No. 6. This time Ailee teams up with well known pianist Yiruma for this R&B single. “Higher” is a track that showcases Ailee’s beautiful voice as well as Yiruma’s sensual piano playing. “Higher” is a song that gives hope, courage, and passion to those who don’t rest for their dreams.

Korea’s first hip-hop couple is in the top 10 this week as the collaboration “The Cure” between Drunken Tiger, his wife Yoon Mirae (T), and rapper Bizzy moves up four spots to No. 7. Drunken Tiger’s father was the inspiration for this song and is the perfect track for those who need a cure from the hardships of life. “The Cure” has an acoustic guitar melody and djembe sound that contrasts with hip hop music today.

The last two new songs in the top 10 are both coming from the popular SBS drama “Master’s Sun.” At No. 9 is Seo In Guk’s “No Matter What.” Seo In Guk is the second male lead in this drama and he also participates in the drama OST. “No Matter What” is the theme song for Seo’s character Kang Woo. The lyrics talk about the feelings he has for the girl, and how his love is getting bigger no matter what.

Yoon Mirae (T) has a second song in the top 10 this week as her R&B ballad “Touch Love” finally reaches the top 10 after lurking below it for several weeks. “Touch Love” is the official title song from “Master’s Sun” and it is probably the top drama OST song so far in 2013. It has topped all the independent charts in Korea. “Touch Love” starts with a piano melody which mixes well with its R&B rhythm. T’s deep voice fits perfectly with the melody.

Along with Hyorin’s “Crazy Of You” which hit the top 10 earlier, “Master’s Sun” produced three top 10 songs and all of the eight released songs from the drama have appeared on our chart. It will battle “That Winter, The Wind Blows” for the best drama OST of this year.
