The special of the year: “Running 9 Project”

“Running Man” captivated viewers with a unique special race each episode, and in honor of the show’s nine-year anniversary, the cast held their first domestic fan meeting “Running 9.” The members worked tirelessly from May to September in order to prepare for the meaningful event. During the fan meeting, they performed a special group performance as well as various individual stages in front of approximately 2,500 fans. The most exciting twist at the fan meeting was the cast members’ mission to identify the “Fan Meeting Spy.” Fans participated enthusiastically in the show’s signature mission, creating an enjoyable time for all the cast, fans, production staff, and viewers.

Most-watched episode of the year: Unboxing – The Secret of the Box

This year’s episode with the highest viewership ratings was the second-half of “Unboxing: The Secret of the Box” broadcast in March, which recorded average viewership ratings of 8.5 percent in the Seoul metropolitan area according to Nielsen Korea. After splitting up into three teams, the members exchanged “precious items that they couldn’t throw away due to lingering attachments” for items of greater value. With the help of the members’ close acquaintances, the cast acquired various rare items and made viewers laugh with their shameless trading. The episode also featured popular stars including Lee Sang Yeob, Oh Chang Suk, and SF9.

Costumes of the year: Avengers + Gung Ye

“Running Man” is unmatched when it comes to the show’s signature “costume show.” This year, the entire cast dressed up as members of Marvel’s “Avengers” for the “Running 9 Project.” Yoo Jae Suk was Captain America, Kim Jong Kook was the Hulk, Lee Kwang Soo was Groot, Song Ji Hyo was Gamora, Jun So Min was Yondu, Yang Se Chan was Rocket, and HaHa was Ant Man. Finally, Ji Suk Jin hilariously dressed up as Gung Ye, and although he was the only non-Marvel character, he blended in seamlessly with the group. The members’ “Avengers” characters were also printed on the fan meeting t-shirts, providing fans with an unforgettable fan meeting gift.

Penalty member of the year: Lee Kwang Soo

The cast member who received the most number of penalties in 2019 was none other than Lee Kwang Soo with a grand total of eight penalties. In second place was Yoo Jae Suk with a total of seven instances, standing alongside Lee Kwang Soo as part of the “Losing-Hand Brothers.” On the other hand, HaHa only received the penalty twice, becoming the “Luckiest Member” in 2019.
