7 Reasons To Keep NewJeans On Your Radar
Founded by ADOR, one of HYBE’s sub-labels, NewJeans is a five-member girl group: Minji, Hanni, Danielle, Haerin, and Hyein. The quintet kickstarted their career on July 22, 2022 with “Attention” as their pre-released debut single from their first extended play that bears the group’s name. Like any rookie group, these rising idols have a lot to show for in terms of concept, choreographies, visuals, and, of course, their music. Having debuted less than six months ago, NewJeans made sure to let their name be heard in charts, music shows, award shows, and so on. Better yet, their comeback is already on its way on January 2, 2023 with “OMG” being their first single album and second release overall.
In case you missed it, here are seven reasons to keep NewJeans on your radar.
1. The members
The group holds Korean, Vietnamese, and Australian nationalities, with the eldest being 18 years old and the youngest being 14 years old, as follows: Minji (2004, Korean), Hanni (2004, Vietnamese-Australian), Danielle (2005, Korean-Australian), Haerin (2006, Korean), and Hyein (2008, Korean). As previously announced by the members themselves, there are no official positions nor a leader appointed, meaning the girls are both a collective and individual power in terms of singing, rapping, dancing, visuals, and leading.

2. Their brand
So who is NewJeans? The group’s name hints on one hand at the timelessness of jeans, which mirrors the brand they want to set themselves in the music industry. On the other hand, the name is a double entendre that insinuates “New genes,” thus giving life to a new generation of K-pop. One thing is evident, these rookies know how to draw attention.
3. Their concept
Being born in the 2000s, the members sure know how to embrace a time where they were still babies. In fact, they have a distinguishable retro fashion sense in their cinematographies and photo shoots. Better yet, the overall concept is supposed to break the normative K-pop image and stick to a simple yet appealing representation. This puts NewJeans’ music above colorful hairstyles and quirky outfits. Their debut was visibly a success, with their debut album breaking records for highest first-week sales in Hanteo history and “Attention” charting in various Spotify charts, thus making NewJeans the first K-pop group to do so.

4. Their music
Everyone loves a group that is involved in the creation of their music, and NewJeans is no exception. In fact, Danielle and Hanni are credited as lyricists for “Attention” and “Hype Boy,” respectively. Plus, their EP “New Jeans” ranked at No. 46 on Rolling Stone’s list of “The 100 Best Albums of 2022,” and their bop “Hype Boy” ranked at No. 24 on “The 100 Best Songs of 2022” list of the same magazine. Talk about a musical feat in such a short amount of time!
5. Their talent
What’s a K-pop group without their skill set? Luckily for us, NewJeans took on the stage of the 2022 KBS Song Festival to showcase what they’re made of. A picture is worth a thousand words, so I’m leaving you with a gazillion ones down below. Enjoy!

It’s always impressive to see a rising artist with many achievements under their belt soon after their debut. NewJeans’ list of achievements is ever-growing in a little under six months. The group landed their first-ever win on “M Countdown” with “Attention,” then took home Hot Rookie at THE-K Billboard Awards a couple of months later. During the major music award season, the members won Performance of the Year (Grand Prize) and Best New Artist at the 2022 Asia Artist Awards. They also won Top 10 Artist and New Artist of the Year at the 2022 Melon Music Awards. The sky is the limit for this fresh and thriving girl group!
7. Their upcoming releases
If you want to stay in the loop of NewJeans’ incredible success, you definitely want to stay up-to-date with their new releases. In fact, the group made a comeback with “Ditto” ahead of their official comeback with their single album “OMG,” scheduled on January 2, 2023. The pre-released single topped iTunes charts globally and helped the members achieve their first-ever certified all-kill so early in their careers. Buckle up, this is just the beginning for NewJeans!
