Stars Who Made It Big Immediately After Their Return From The Military This Year
Although we all expect (and dread) the enlistment of our favorite male celebrities, nothing makes the two-year wait any easier. However, it does help when they jump right back into work after they’re discharged, giving us the new content we’ve been anticipating.
Here are six male stars whose returns from the military this year were so exciting, we forgot they ever left!
Kang Ha Neul made his return to the industry with the drama “When the Camellia Blooms,” starring as Hwang Yong Shik, a police officer with undying love for Dong Baek (played by Gong Hyo Jin). His perfect fit for the role resonated with everyone and the drama repeatedly broke its own viewership ratings records! The recently concluded drama also achieved the highest miniseries record for the entire year and the busy actor has already decided on his next project.
Super Junior’s Kyuhyun
Following his discharge in May, the final Super Junior member to complete his military service made an extravagant solo return with “Aewol-ri.” He also joined the casts of “Salty Tour,” “Kang’s Kitchen 3,” as well as “New Journey to the West”! To top it all off, he joined his group in making their highly anticipated comeback with “SUPER Clap.” Kyuhyun’s next project will be a musical, marking his first in almost four years.
Less than two weeks after his discharge in late October, Nike announced their collaboration with the BIGBANG member, marking G-Dragon’s first activity since returning. The limited collaboration was so successful that they resold for 10 million won (approximately $8,600). The shoes launch globally on November 23.
Ji Chang Wook returned from his military service to naturally melt our hearts with the drama, “Melting Me Softly.” In the recently concluded drama, he plays a variety show producer who participates in an experiment to be frozen for 24 hours, but instead wakes up 20 years later. Ji Chang Wook is also already in talks for his next drama, which is about Charles Darwin’s proposition that all species of life have descended over time from common ancestors.

Although not an official return, Kim Soo Hyun made his first appearance post-discharge with a cameo in hit tvN drama “Hotel Del Luna” to support his former co-stars, IU and Yeo Jin Goo. Despite his short appearance, Kim Soo Hyun garnered tons of attention, even leading to hopes for a potential second season. He has also recently been in talks to star in his first drama in five years, where he would play a community health worker at a psychiatric ward who is blessed with a great body, smarts, the ability to sympathize with others, patience, stamina, and more.

One of our favorite child actors made us feel super old with his return from the military, but we forgot all that when he immediately confirmed his upcoming appearance in the film “Hero,” also starring Kim Go Eun, Park Jin Joo, Na Moon Hee, Jo Jae Yoon, and Bae Jung Nam. He also reunited with IU, who he used to host “Inkigayo” with, and whose 2011 music video for hit song “You & I” he featured in, for her recent “Above the Time” music video.
